RAVING REVIEW: In the stark, sun-scorched expanses of New Mexico, BONEYARD unspools a chilling mystery wrapped in the real-life horror of unresolved disappearances. The plot knits together the investigative talents of Detective Ortega (Brian Van Holt,) Police Chief Carter (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson,) and Agent Petrovick (Mel Gibson,) who dig into the layers of deceit and uncover a chilling web of betrayal. This gritty quest for truth grips the audience and plunges them into the disturbing underbelly of criminal pursuits.

Gibson brings a compelling gravitas to the role of Agent Petrovick. Drawing on his vast acting and experience, Gibson's portrayal is layered with raw intensity and a flawed humanity that anchors the film’s emotional depth. While I have personal issues with Gibson and some of his views on the larger world, there’s no denying that he can tackle a specific role with finesse.

Jackson, portraying Police Chief Carter, infuses his character with a robust authenticity that reflects his transformation from a music superstar to an accomplished actor. His performance is dynamic and deeply engaging, adding a layer of realism to the film’s gritty narrative. His role may have been the most intriguing part of the film, but he delivers an excellent performance that feels incredibly grounded.

Nora Zehetner, as Detective Young, delivers a performance that perfectly captures the taxing realities of law enforcement. With her extensive background in television, including roles that span from dramatic to action-packed, Zehetner adds a significant layer of depth, portraying the personal and professional challenges faced by those in her line of duty. Although I would have liked to see more of her character in the film, she needed to be more utilized for the potential she offered.

At the helm, Director Asif Akbar melds a hard-hitting crime story with fictional flair, creating a narrative rich with tension and intrigue. His directorial touch balances thrilling moments with a respectful nod to the real-life tragedies that inspire the story. Akbar’s ambitious vision for BONEYARD is not just to entertain but to resonate intensely, shining a light on the darker facets of society through the cinematic lens.

As the narrative tightens, the film escalates in pace and suspense, drawing the audience deeper into a vortex of emotional and moral complexity. The climactic twists are both surprising and thought-provoking, challenging viewers to reconsider their perceptions and engage with the film on a deeper level.

The collective efforts of Gibson, Jackson, Zehetner, and Van Holt elevate the film. Each contributes unique interpretative styles to drive the narrative forward. Their performances underscore the film’s dual objectives of entertaining and enlightening, adding layers of emotional resonance and dramatic tension.

Ultimately, BONEYARD breaks away from the conventional confines of its genre, offering an incisive exploration of the human condition coupled with a dogged pursuit of justice. The film underscores ongoing societal issues, emphasizing the profound impact of crime on communities and invoking a call to action against the insidious shadows of injustice. It is more than just a movie; it is a powerful narrative that commands attention and action.

    1. Reviews are subjective, and I’m sorry you thought this film was awful. I didn’t love it by any stretch, but it also wasn’t as bad as most of these direct-to-video releases like this.
