RAVING REVIEW: SCREAM THERAPY blends chills with chuckles thanks to a natural dynamic among the cast, taking the audience on a fun-filled journey that ventures more into a girl’s weekend comedy than horror. Rather than being spectators to an unfolding narrative, the viewers find themselves immersed in a horror-infused comedy tale, cheering for a bonded group of friends. At the heart of this movie, there’s a subtle but effective streak of horror that adds layers to the plot. And beneath the narrative’s surface, it broaches a pivotal societal issue—women’s empowerment, organically integrated into the story’s fabric.
Cassie Keet ventures into feature film direction for the first time with this film, effortlessly employing her long decade-plus of acting and writing experiences. The ensemble—comprising Claire Dellamar, Geri Courtney-Austin, Harley Bronwyn, Mandie Cheung, and Rochelle Anderson—adds harmonious notes to this cinematic composition, each actor’s performance contributing to the movie’s overall appeal.
Even though SCREAM THERAPY occasionally veers toward the realm of B-cinema, the cast’s collective performance helps maintain a balanced narrative drive. The film employs self-aware humor and sincere commentary on social issues. Its dialogues carry a punch of witty wisdom, each line leaving a distinct impression. Eschewing the usual horror trope of cheap jump scares, this film sheds more light on the evolution of its characters.
The story sets off against a seemingly serene backdrop of a desert retreat, where five friends seek a therapeutic escape. But the tables turn quickly as they get entangled with an incel cult seeking a human sacrifice. This transition from tranquility to an all-out survival situation leaves a lasting imprint on the audience’s minds.
Keet’s directorial debut is a testament to her unwavering dedication to filmmaking. Her multifaceted background in acting, writing, and producing helps with her unique approach, which shines brightly in SCREAM THERAPY. As she steps into a new role, Keet channels her fascination with the horror genre into this project.
SCREAM THERAPY reflects Keet’s frustrations towards internet trolls disrupting women’s rights and democracy. The narrative breaks away from the stereotypical portrayal of women being their worst antagonists. Instead, it advocates for women’s unity and resilience, highlighting their strength to overcome adversities, all while humorously adding elements of demonic sacrifices into the mix.
Despite a tight budget and a fast-paced pre-production phase, SCREAM THERAPY is a testament to a united team’s passion and dedication. With a small cast and a sparse desert as their stage, they birthed a distinct indie gem amidst the pandemic chaos. This film was carried out due to the incredible cast and crew, and you can tell, even with minor hiccups, that the passion for the film was the number one priority. I loved seeing the dedication and focus that came into play here. This movie is about the cast; the five outstanding leads deliver non-stop fun and laughter, making it an incredibly entertaining horror-comedy. While it has its scary moments, it’s a comedy with a message to be told and a blast to experience.
There’s no missing the film’s social message, which is particularly relevant in today’s world. The storyline boldly showcases women’s empowerment, taking on incel culture in a very literal way. This aspect adds depth to the film, making it more meaningful than I initially anticipated. It stokes curiosity, beckoning viewers to peer into what transpired behind the camera. SCREAM THERAPY sets itself apart as a movie that should be noticed.
