RAVING REVIEW: WITH LOVE AND A MAJOR ORGAN, set against the backdrop of a dystopian society held hostage by the firm grip of an intrusive app, this cinematic journey grapples with the profound effect of technology on our emotional well-being and world. Each frame and dialogue leads us further into the depths of our feelings, questioning how much we’ve allowed tech to numb our genuine emotions.
In this compelling emotional landscape, we meet Anabel, portrayed by Anna Maguire. Her profession as a Virtual Insurance broker might not scream “sentimental,” but her heart tells a different story. In a world constantly battling emotional suppression, Anabel fights the current, her authenticity shining brightly amid the fog of conformity.
Enter George, an emotionally stifled character brought to life with nuanced sensitivity by Hamza Haq. His meeting with Anabel is nothing short of tectonic, causing ripples that disrupt her harmonious world. When she decides to entrust him with her heart, it sets in motion a transformative journey, peeling back the layers of human emotion with every turn.
Feeling besieged by sudden emotions, George seeks solace in his overbearing mother, Mona, played precisely by Veena Sood. Simultaneously, grappling with the repercussions of her emotional generosity, Anabel confronts a void more profound than she had fathomed.
Director Kim Albright weaves Julia Lederer’s acclaimed play into an engaging narrative tapestry. She accurately charts the tumultuous waters of human emotions, interspersing the narrative with dark humor that hooks the audience right from the get-go.
A pivotal plot point emerges with Mona’s overbearing protection, symbolized by a physical metaphor brought to life. This serves as a moment in her life for her trepidation toward emotional vulnerability, and it fortifies the film’s critique of societal oddities. Mona’s controlling ways collide head-on with Anabel’s emotional bravery, adding more tension to the film.
Casey, masterfully played by Donna Benedicto, who plays Anabel’s grounding force, is caught in this emotional vortex. Her suggestion to explore this app and its dating realm is juxtaposed against Anabel’s unwavering allegiance to emotional truthfulness, further underlining Anabel’s steadfast character.
WITH LOVE AND A MAJOR ORGAN delves into the unsettling reality of technology-induced isolation in our times. It underscores that our hearts, in this unique world, reflect who we are, advocating for emotional transparency and genuine human connections.
Scriptwriter Julia Lederer adds to the narrative potency by reintroducing a tale examining our approach to handling emotions. She challenges us with a powerful question: Should we shield ourselves from life’s harsh blows or permit ourselves to experience the whole gamut of feelings – the highs and lows, the ecstasy and agony? She likens the outpour of emotions to an act of rebellion, emphasizing the film’s central theme – the contemplation of love as an intense journey, not just a fleeting feeling.
