RAVING REVIEW: Welcome to the dazzling decade of Indonesia's 1960s, elegantly captured by Kamila Andini in BEFORE, NOW & THEN. It's a vibrant and vivid step back in time where we follow the intriguing story of Nana (Happy Salma,) surrounded by luxury but deeply haunted by memories of a once-lived life. Married to a wealthy plantation magnate, her luxurious life seems enviable. Yet, the chapters of her past, particularly the tragic loss of her former love amidst tumultuous times, continue to cast shadows on her present.

Now, toss in an unexpected twist! Enter Ino, the secret lover of her late husband. Instead of the anticipated rivalry, we see an alliance, a blooming bond, and a testament to the resilience of women in a world that often sidelines them. This unexpected friendship, brought to life on screen by the talented Laura Basuki, dares to challenge societal norms, offering a fresh perspective on relationships and the evolution of gender roles.

The beautiful dialogue amplifies the film's charm, making every word, whisper, and shout feel raw and honest. Batara Goempar's stellar cinematography offers a feast for the eyes, delivering scene after scene of cultural richness, from traditional costumes to the captivating Indonesian melodies that set the ambiance just right. This isn't merely a nod to global cinematic techniques; it's Andini and their team making an unmistakable mark, ensuring that the essence of Indonesia shines throughout.

Digging deep into Nana's past, we encounter the heartache of her harrowing escape from rebels, the despair from losing her family, and the challenges she faced amidst political unrest. However, even as these ghosts from the past keep looming, her present isn't entirely melancholy. It's a testament to the film's depth that these dual timelines are explored with such nuance.

One particularly standout metaphor by Andini involves the portrayal of hair. Representing a repository of secrets and stories, Nana believes that a woman's flowing hair conceals her innermost tales, offering a poetic commentary on societal expectations that have long defined women.

It's noteworthy how BEFORE, NOW, & THEN effortlessly entice viewers to dive deep while allowing room for personal interpretations. The film is an ode to Andini's dedication to spotlighting the grit and determination of Indonesian women during tumultuous times. Through the contrasts of Nana's life, from her riches to emotional battles and her relationship with Ino, fraught with shadows of betrayal, the narrative skillfully comments on the myriad facets of femininity, determination, and an innate desire for freedom.

BEFORE, NOW, & THEN is a delight to the senses, intertwining intricate details of Indonesia's history, the personal tribulations of its characters, and the tireless spirit of women. It looks back at Indonesia's rich past while hinting at a promising, progressive future. The movie's allure is undeniable, captivating audiences from start to finish. But, a word of caution: it might feel a smidge lengthy for some.

In conclusion, if you're ready for a movie experience that takes you through time, emotions, and powerful narratives, THEN, NOW & BEFORE is your ticket to ride.
