RAVING REVIEW: This film wasn’t made for me; honestly, that’s okay! I understand that not every film will be for me; I believe that’s one of the biggest misconceptions in cinema. People think the film can't be something they like if they’re not seeing themselves on screen. I still loved the experience, and that’s why it’s so important that I know how vital this film's message is, especially for the MRKH community (a rare congenital disorder that affects the female reproductive system.) From the moment it begins, FITTING IN captures the essence of teenage angst and exploration with a refreshing honesty that sets it apart from the conventional high school narrative. Maddie Ziegler's portrayal of Lindy is remarkable, bringing depth and vulnerability to a role that demands a delicate balance between strength and sensitivity. Under Molly McGlynn's direction, the film navigates the choppy waters of identity, acceptance, and the complex journey toward self-discovery, creating a narrative that's as engaging as it is enlightening. FITTING IN is a beautiful piece of genuine storytelling in the often predictable sea of coming-of-age dramas.
The film WILL make some people uncomfortable for multiple reasons, but that’s the point. Our society's weird obsession with ignoring topics like this is unhealthy. We can’t and won't evolve as a species if we continue to turn our heads anytime something about “sex” is brought up in media.
Diving deeper into the film, Lindy's battle against a rare medical condition adds a unique layer to her quest for belonging. This struggle, set against the relatable backdrop of high school life, enriches the plot and adds a compelling dimension to the character. The support she receives from key figures, including her mother, Rita (Emily Hampshire,) and her loyal friend Vivian (Djouliet Amara,) forms the story's backbone, highlighting the importance of relationships in navigating life's challenges. These characters bring warmth and realism to the screen, creating an intricate and inviting narrative fabric.
McGlynn's directorial approach is a delicate balancing act between the serious and the light-hearted, effectively using humor to bring fun to otherwise heavy themes. The film ventures into areas often untouched by mainstream teen flicks, providing a much-needed platform for discussing reproductive health and gender identity. Ziegler's performance is a journey through the emotional spectrum, embodying Lindy's resilience and growth with a grace that resonates long after the credits roll.
FITTING IN shines in its ability to engage the audience in Lindy's world at her level, offering a viewing experience as profound as it is enjoyable. The film's knack for blending emotional depth with genuine humor ensures that the story remains relatable and impactful, even as it tackles complex issues. The film's strengths lie in its character development, innovative narrative, and the authenticity of its message.
McGlynn's connection to the film's central theme adds a layer of authenticity to the screenplay, making FITTING IN a story and a statement. The film addresses the often impersonal treatment of women's health issues with a critical yet empathetic eye, opening up a dialogue on crucial yet underrepresented topics in cinema. By focusing on Lindy's experience with MRKH syndrome, the film bridges gaps in representation and understanding, making a significant contribution to the discourse on sexual health and identity.
FITTING IN is a remarkable piece of cinema that challenges and captivates its audience, making it a standout addition to the genre. McGlynn and Ziegler's contributions are pivotal, elevating the film to extraordinary heights. Viewers are left inspired and reflective, contemplating their own stories of fitting in and standing out. FITTING IN does more than entertain; it celebrates the individuality in all of us, making it an essential watch for anyone who has ever felt on the fringes. Ultimately, FITTING IN is a heartfelt reminder of the beauty and strength of embracing one's true self.
