An interesting premise with a few hiccups in its execution. So first and foremost, DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT read any synopsis about the series if you plan on watching this (especially IMDb’s!) While I know I’m more prone to being upset about spoilers than most, it seems that IMDb is doing what it can to ruin an exciting twist for the series in the first line of its synopsis. Even Netflix’s synopsis gives away the same information as well. While the twist is not vital to enjoying the series, I think it’s a much stronger surprise to find out while watching!
Michelle Monaghan (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE) leads the series in a strong performance that gave me flashbacks to her role in GONE BABY GONE. Not so much the character she plays but the feeling I had while watching her character interact with others. Interestingly, the story has cascading consequences for Monaghan’s “character” when they realize how dangerous deception can be.
As always, this series continues the trend of the new golden age of quality content for TV. Some of the best content TV has ever seen is being produced now. I don’t think anyone could’ve guessed the budgets and star power that TV would see due to the streaming wars.
With each episode ranging from 40-50 minutes, the series is an easy binge. Each episode expands on the furthering story and drops more hints and clues along the way, with no single episode being uneventful. Karen Robinson (SCHITT’S CREEK) played a vital role in the series, and I loved watching their progression and interaction with Monaghan throughout the series.
I’m a little concerned with the news about a month ago that Netflix will be changing its focus and not taking as many risks. I don’t know what that will look like in the long term, especially for their original content. I hope it doesn’t harm the director-driven creations they’re known for. Streaming services are ever-evolving, but knee-jerk changes could be catastrophic in the larger picture.
