Pre-conceived ideas are always something you should question in general. Based on the little information I knew, I assumed that releases from Full Moon Features would be more like some of the shot on VHS direct-to-video films that I’ve seen before. While the company is headed by B-movie icon Charles Band, this was a delightful surprise for me.
Sure, this won’t be in talks for Oscar consideration, but come on, let's be honest; they’re a little overrated. This was honestly an enjoyable experience from start to finish. It knew what it was and took advantage of that situation. Over the top, funny and outrageous, but simultaneously, it kept you hooked the entire film because you didn’t know what would be coming next.
The story was a pretty straightforward rip on what so many strive for today with the “instant” success of the internet celebrity and their constant hustle to always be the next “big” thing by branching out into every conceivable form of influencing.
The film itself looked fantastic, being shot digitally, but it didn’t have that over-the-top surreal feel that so many digital films suffer from. I also really enjoyed the chemistry between the film's three main leads. You could tell that they legitimately enjoyed working on this film. This wasn’t just a phoned-in performance but something they did for more than a paycheck. I honestly can’t wait for my next Full Moon Feature experience!
What probably impressed me more than anything was the attention to detail regarding the set building. I don’t feel like I’m spoiling anything when I mention that this is an homage to the classic films where someone “grows” and then wreaks havoc on a cityscape. However, they could’ve quickly done some cheap-looking, pre-built models, and instead, it felt like they wanted to make it as believable as possible within their means.
