RAVING REVIEW: Stepping into the director’s chair with an unequivocal flair, Dylan Anglin presents PESADILLA. This film marries elements of indie cinema with the visceral thrills of the horror genre. Despite its shoestring budget and a tight filming schedule of just 25 days peppered with setbacks like equipment malfunctions and personal challenges, PESADILLA emerges as a raw exploration of grief and moral ambiguity, underscoring its cast and crew's tenacity and resolve.

At the heart of PESADILLA is a story that develops under dire circumstances. A bungled burglary shatters a family’s existence and spirals into a nightmare. Anglin uses this ordeal as a canvas, utilizing gritty, handheld cinematography to thrust the audience directly into the chaos. While occasionally yielding a disjointed visual experience, this method mirrors the emotional disturbances endured by the characters, enhancing the film’s immersive quality.

Mike Davis’ portrayal of ‘Gramps’ is fascinating. He balances a chilling presence with a magnetic allure. His performance anchors the film’s tension and suggests intriguing narrative depths ripe for future exploration. Complementing his performance, the ensemble cast, including Anthony Gracia, Augustine Driscoll, Gavin Cade Hulberg, Diya Taylor, and Niki Kapadia, guides us through the spectrum of human emotion, from despair to resilience, enriching the film’s incursion into the instincts that emerge in the face of adversity.

The auditory confines of PESADILLA, crafted by Alvaro Rodriguez Cabezas, envelop the viewer in a score that’s as haunting as provocative. While it sometimes threatens to overshadow the dialogue, it complements the intense narrative. However, Anglin’s ambitious vision sometimes muddles the clarity at the forefront, with certain scenes that seem to linger on a bit and the plot occasionally losing its way in the complexity of its own story. This overambition, while a testament to Anglin’s fervor for storytelling, also highlights the intrinsic challenges of aligning a vision with a creation. Anglin’s choice to prioritize raw, authentic storytelling lends an immediacy to the unfolding events and deepens the audience's engagement with the plot.

The film uses the backdrop of a home invasion to probe the dark corners of human emotions and motives. The film’s unsettling and open-ended conclusion challenges viewers to reflect on the profound consequences of the characters’ actions, leaving a haunting resonance. While the film occasionally exhibits lapses in pacing and dialogue, these flaws are minor compared to the achievement of creating a film all your own. PESADILLA asserts the potential of the indie horror genre to craft complex, compelling stories from minimal resources. It celebrates the innovative spirit of trailblazing cinema while establishing its unique voice.

Anglin’s commitment to delivering a story that’s as genuine as it is innovative is evident throughout the film. Crafted for an audience that appreciates the unvarnished truth of storytelling, where every imperfection adds to the authenticity, PESADILLA is a heartfelt testament to the spirit of independent filmmaking. This film is a labor of love, a powerful declaration of the enduring spirit of filmmakers who defy limitations to tell stories.

As a new voice in feature filmmaking, Anglin proves that creativity and resolve can transform even the tightest budgets into narratives that resonate and linger with their audience. PESADILLA marks a stride forward for Anglin after several short films. I’m excited to see where his career goes from here!
