In the famous words of director Bong Joon-ho, “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films,” and that’s never been more true than in this film. I feel like many people will see Spoken Language: Spanish and then run in the other direction. I used to have a similar reaction, so don’t worry; if you’re not a fan of subtitles, this is a great film to dip your toe into the waters with. While it is in Spanish, the horror genre lends itself to being easy to follow even without subtitles.

When I first started reviewing films for Shudder, I heard a lot of comments that people weren’t a fan of this or that. I’ve reviewed three Shudder “originals” so far and would highly recommend two of them, with the third being recommended for the most part. This experience proves that you can’t take anyone’s views on film as your own. Films are mainly subjective, and even though there are objective aspects to most films, you can’t easily predict what someone will or won’t like.

With a very straightforward survival-style story, the twist on what makes this different from your standard zombie film is interesting enough to keep you invested throughout the entire movie. The effects were all well done and set the mood for the film; it was dark while not overshadowing the action throughout. I’ve found many horror films just blackout most of the screen to hide imperfections. In stark contrast, we get to see everything in this one, and I think that alone makes it a better film.

With a relatively small cast Sofía González (Miriam,) Daniel Hendler (Luis,) and Paula Silva (Iris) all get a chance to be the focus. The story follows a nerve-wracking “escape” by our main stars, who don’t immediately realize that they’re in danger. I think that adds to the uniqueness of the experience as well. I don’t want to give away the importance of the title, but it’s probably not what you’re thinking. I was impressed with González’s performance and am excited to see what future projects she may get to pursue.

If you’re looking for a unique thriller with plenty of horror elements throughout, I recommend this one. It’s a fun time that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you figure out what’s coming next. This is precisely the type of film that the genre needs, solid and with enough originality that keeps them from looking like a carbon copy of something else.

Thanks to Shudder for sharing this great new horror experience!
