A Must See Full of Charm and Attitude

One of the best parts of reviewing films is the unexpected; when I go back and rewatch an older movie that I love (LA LA LAND), I know what to expect, I’ve been there, done that, and while I still love the movie, that first-time excitement is gone. Getting to watch an excellent film for the first time is magical. That’s what made this afternoon so great; this was such a fun and charismatic film.

One of the best types of film is a story about people that can touch your heart; this hits all of those marks and then some. While I don’t think this synopsis fits the film 100%, I think it gets the basic idea of the story across in a cute way. “A teenage delinquent teams up with a surly children's party magician to navigate her dysfunctional family and inner demons.”

While Rhea Perlman (Margot) is in the film and is her usual fantastic self, the hands-down star of the film is Miya Cech (Sammy), as her role is core to the entire movie. At only fifteen, she already has seventeen acting credits to her name. I haven’t seen any of her other roles but based on this; she has a lot to live up to in the future.

The film could’ve gone a little darker; honestly, I don’t mean that badly, but it tended to keep to the happy side more often than not, even when dealing with topics that could’ve had a lot more weight. Ultimately the film is a comedy and keeps that tone throughout the majority of the film. While it doesn’t have an official rating now, I think it will ultimately fall in the PG, maybe PG-13 area (due to a few scenes.)

This would be a great family film, especially for young adults; it shows Sammy confronting some significant hurdles in her life and overcoming them finally coming out the other side stronger for it. I will be shocked if this doesn’t gain a lot of traction and get a more extensive release to follow. It will only be playing in a handful of select cities this week, but I would love to see it roll out to more and more. If you get the chance to see it, whether now in theaters or when it is released on streaming or physical media down the road, definitely take the time and check it out.
