This film is the prime example of why I suggest avoiding reading about a movie before watching it. While I didn’t have that experience, I read a few comments/reviews about it and was appalled by their narrow-minded takes on the film. By no means am I suggesting that I’m perfect when it comes to reviewing, but I take pride in trying to remain open-minded and unbiased when writing my thoughts about any film.

It is a beautifully told story about a family and what defines a family, managing to balance comedy and drama. Most importantly, it shows that you should remain open to new ideas of what you think is right. I wasn’t sure where the story would go initially, but the brilliant performance by Catherine Frot as Eve and their interactions with the rest of the cast made for a beautiful experience. While the entire cast had remarkable performances, perhaps Olivia Côte as Vera (Eve’s assistant) left the biggest impression on me.

The story itself was inspired by director Pierre Pinaud’s passion for flowers, which was built upon by the fact that roses are a specialty of France. The film focuses on Eve’s career, following in her father's footsteps as a rose designer specializing in breeding and creating unique and beautiful hybrids.

The film's message is more profound than the incredible story on screen. It digs deeper into social issues currently plaguing the world, described as a “David and Goliath story.” As the story progresses, we see more layers pulled back, giving you the complete picture. I can’t talk about a film about roses without mentioning how beautiful they looked on screen. The colors alone are stunning, but the shots' framing combined with the incredible score sometimes gave an almost surreal feel. This was balanced perfectly by the dialogue that would immediately pull you back into the story.
