I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into with this film; the anxiety of the feeling of being trapped in this cave was only part of the overall level of stress-induced moments in this. I found the film to be genuinely intriguing because it could almost be mistaken as a documentary at times, the recreation of some of these now fictionalized moments (fictionalized into being more dramatic for the film.)

I genuinely think the visual elements were one of the film's most vital aspects. The atmosphere is everything, and this film oozes with it. The cave scenes, the rushing water, the intense moments of darkness, and the characters' underwater struggles all add to the film's intensity. Unfortunately, I felt the film was a little more drawn out than I would’ve preferred. I understand this was based on a real-life event that took place over a long period, but the film didn’t handle the time well. There were moments when minutes would struggle to feel like minutes.

This ended up being one of the largest rescue missions in history, one of the most interesting aspects is that Irish cave diver Jim Warny played himself in the film; I think that it added a sense of realism that otherwise may have become an over-produced aspect of the film. If you are frightened of tight places, this may not be the film for you. This truly is a thriller, down to the last moments. As I mentioned above, this sometimes feels more like a documentary than something filmed to recreate that experience. The making of documentary included with the film gave a look into just how much effort was put into creating this world as faithfully as possible while still adding to it to create a more exciting movie.

  1. Thank you for taking one for the team. I cannot do this movie. Being trapped in a cave is a huge nightmare. But I appreciate you taking that bullet for us. lol.
