First and foremost, if you don’t know who Angourie Rice is, this will be a fantastic introduction. She’s had many other roles, but most have been relatively minor. This is her introduction to the world, so to speak. She gets to be front and center, and I love it. Not only does she play the lead character “Honor,” but she gets to break the fourth wall and narrate the story to the audience. While this isn’t the first time a film has ever done that before (think FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF), this was done as what I can only assume was an homage to those that have come before.
While generally speaking, the film didn’t break any new ground, and it didn’t really have to. It was a fun story that had a few questionable moments but, as a whole, served its purpose and then some. Anyone who has been a fan of classic “revenge” style comedies of the last decade will feel at home here. While the film didn’t go too dark, a few moments, as mentioned above, almost felt out of place. While none of them ruined the movie for me, they felt like part of a differently rated film. Most of this was a fun teen comedy, but a few moments felt borderline R-rated. Now, if that isn’t a problem for you, then you should enjoy this for what it is.
While most of the cast was great, Rice and Gaten Matarazzo made the film as enjoyable as it was. They had a fun yet awkward chemistry that made you question every moment the two were on screen together. What’s real, and what isn’t? The twist we eventually get isn’t what I was expecting. However, the ending was a little predictable; it didn’t take away from that satisfactory feeling of having watched an enjoyable film.
