RAVING REVIEW: Cue the stage lights on a Texas stage in 1999, where Foghat, the quintessential rock powerhouse, lit up the night with a performance that resonated deep into the echelons of rock history. FOGHAT – SLOW RIDE: LIVE IN CONCERT, captured just before the passing of their magnetic and original frontman Dave Peverett in 2000, stands as a testament to their enduring charisma and sheer musical force. This concert is a treasure trove for listeners, packed with the vibrant energy of a band that somehow remained timeless.
Rewinding to Foghat's inception in the early '70s, their trajectory from bluesy roots to stadium rock stardom is unbelievable. The original ensemble of Dave Peverett, Roger Earl, Rod Price, and Tony Stevens, known for their synergistic prowess, crafted some of the most unforgettable blues-rock tunes of their time. This particular performance is electrified by the group's intensity, further enhanced by Bryan Bassett (a 90’s addition to the group,) whose fresh energy reinvigorated Foghat classics.
The concert's setlist was a director's cut of musical mastery, blending classic anthems with newer but still “iconic tracks.” ‘Fool For The City’ and newer tunes like ‘Rock This House’ and ‘Angel Of Mercy’ proved that Foghat was nowhere near the end of its “Journey” (okay, so the joke sounded funnier in my head.) One of many standout moments was the electrifying performance of 'I Just Want To Make Love To You,' a track Foghat transformed into a signature piece in 1972.
The filmed performance captured Foghat’s dynamic stage presence and, as a bonus, offered a nice blend of behind-the-scenes clips and insightful interviews. It provided a backstage pass to the band’s creative process. Some of the editing choices seemed a little jarring, especially the abrupt cuts between tracks; as another review mentioned, it was as though they wanted to make the film more “radio” friendly instead of the actual concert experience.
Despite these hitches, FOGHAT – SLOW RIDE: LIVE IN CONCERT is a full-bodied celebration of Foghat's musical journey and enduring legacy, marked by the vitality of its performances and the poignant timing of its original performance.
This album is more than just a collection of live tracks; it delves into and celebrates the decades of music defining Foghat’s illustrious career. As a tribute to Dave Peverett’s memorable leadership, FOGHAT – SLOW RIDE: LIVE IN CONCERT is a must-have for anyone who cherishes the power and depth of authentic rock music, making it an essential addition to any music lover's collection.
