RAVING REVIEW: THE SAD GIRLS OF THE MOUNTAINS is a gripping and unorthodox tale set in a remote mountain retreat where Selma, Tess, Lara, and Momo carve out an existence away from the grasp of society's burdens. In this bold mockumentary, they challenge patriarchal norms through the unlikely fusion of adult content production and feminist activism. This dual world of creativity helps finance their lives and supports Kurdish women's militias. The story is told through a rebellious eye, capturing their struggle against constraints and their quest for autonomy.

The opening scenes immerse viewers in the contemplative atmosphere of “the cabin,” where each woman shares the profound personal motivations behind their radical decision to withdraw from society. Their retreat is not only an escape but also a deliberate act of defiance and self-empowerment. Through the intimate lens of the mockumentary, we see how the creation and distribution of adult content become tools for survival and instruments of activism, juxtaposing their isolation with their engagement in global feminist causes.

The tranquility of their sanctuary is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of two journalists who seek to document this utopia. Their presence soon becomes an invasive force, threatening the sanctuary the women have created. This twist highlights the vulnerability of personal revolution to external misinterpretation and the media's predatory approach to intimate, secluded worlds.

The film, streaming on PinkLabel, also features a revealing discussion between director Candy Flip and Shine Louise Houston, director of the San Francisco PornFilmFestival (where the film opened the 2020 festival.) The film critiques the entertainment industry and offers a commentary on media representation of activism and youth.

THE SAD GIRLS OF THE MOUNTAINS examines the superficial treatment prevalent in some documentaries through its mockumentary style, which cleverly satirizes these media formats. It offers a genuine connection with its characters, contrasting sharply with the media's often trivialized portrayals of serious issues. The film’s approach lays bare the oversimplification of feminist activism by mainstream media and challenges viewers to engage more deeply with the subjects.

Through its blend of satire and serious analysis, the film poses challenging questions about the current state of feminist movements and their depiction in popular media. It compels the audience to consider the complexities of dismantling systems from within. It sparks debate over issues like capitalism, the ethics of armed resistance, and the efficacy of feminist strategies constrained by capitalist frameworks. If you’re looking for a film that makes you think, this is for you!

THE SAD GIRLS OF THE MOUNTAINS is a journey through feminism, activism, and sacrifice. By paralleling satire with incisive social commentary, the film encourages viewers to rethink their views on many different aspects of life. It entertains and stimulates dialogue on the challenges of living a politically active life in the digital era, proving to be a critical reflection on the dilemmas and contradictions of contemporary feminist discourse.
