Anyone who follows my reviews knows that my 2.5 out of 5 stars aren’t the same as many others. I look at the five-star scale as literally what it is, many will fight and argue against it, but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me. A half-star rating is the lowest possible, a film I didn’t enjoy, and a wasted opportunity. While a five-star review is one of the best films I’ve seen, something I won’t ever forget, and a masterpiece in my eyes. So naturally, I would put a 2.5 directly in the middle.
That puts this film right in the center for me, there were a lot of things that I enjoyed about it, but there were also some things that just weren’t my style. Traditionally, I’m not a fan of slow-burn-style horror films; this was the slowest of burns. I would classify it as a drama/thriller, even though it’s also listed as a horror film. However, the cover art for the DVD was probably one of the most intriguing I’ve seen in some time.
This was a gothic horror film with a similar style and felt very close to THE VVITCH stylistically. Set in New York in 1843, the atmospheric feel of the film played as much into the feeling you had while watching it as the story itself. With a simple story, the film was able to focus on character development and the overall feel of the world we were in.
One of the most exciting aspects was seeing Isabelle Fuhrman in a role outside ORPHAN. While I know she’s had other parts; this was the first time I’ve seen her in anything after watching ORPHAN and its sequel for the first time. I almost feel as though I’ve type cast her in my mind. I think she was nearly flawless in the role, so I have a hard time seeing her in anything else.
