The pacing was the most significant horror here; the film had everything going for it but couldn’t escape its blackhole. I was impressed by the story and was excited to check it out. In short, the film deals with all 572 residents of a small town walking along the “Yellow Brick Road” after deciding to leave their lives behind them. This was in part due to their obsession with THE WIZARD OF OZ, though only 300 of the bodies were discovered. Sounds incredible, doesn’t it?

Sadly that’s where the film loses its way, similarly to how the townspeople lost theirs. In the movie, a group of people searches for answers, and once in the woods of a mountainous town, they begin to see and hear strange things. Then a series of unexplained events happened, leading to a fear-driven ride with no answers. Once we reach the end, we go off the rails for what feels like a shock factor. Sound familiar? Someone mentioned that this reminded them of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, I feel like once I heard that, things instantly started to click. Take THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and add in a little bit of 2015’s THE VVITCH, and this is what you end up with.

The film's visuals are hard to beat; it had an atmosphere that I couldn’t even explain. The movie kept this eerie “what’s that over there” feeling without trying. Sadly the overall pacing was too much for me to overcome. I can almost guarantee that there is a cult following for this film, something about it just hooked me.

While I hadn’t heard of this film (it was initially released in 2011), I instantly fell in love with the idea of it. I would love to see a direct remake or a sequel to the film. I feel like there is so much potential left on the table here. I think this could be a fascinating film or even franchise with the proper script and cast.
