RAVING REVIEW: MR. & MRS. SMITH on Prime Video reinvents a familiar tale with a surprising twist. While the 2005 action/comedy wasn’t the official first take on the property, it's what series creators (Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover) have said to have reinvented. The series, led by the dynamic duo of Glover and Maya Erskine, tackles a narrative that creatively combines the thrills of espionage with the emotional turmoil of a unique marriage arrangement. This captivating concoction of action and drama offers a fresh perspective on the spy genre.

Prime Video's MR. & MRS. SMITH breathes new life into the spy thriller, blending suspense and humor with just the right mix of relationship drama. Glover and Erskine excel as the series leads, two spies navigating the complexities of marriage, mayhem, and more.

The series is a journey that balances the high tension of the world of espionage, spies, and secret missions and the emotional roller coaster of what defines a relationship. Each episode is a standalone experience with various larger season-long arcs, merging intense action scenes reminiscent of Hollywood blockbusters (that opening scene, whew!) with moments exploring human connection's true depths. This balance of heart-pounding action and heartfelt drama is elevated by various guest stars like Wagner Moura and Parker Posey, who add unique flavor to the storyline.

I’m hoping for a second season where we get deeper character exploration, particularly in unraveling John and Jane's backstories and internal conflicts. A deeper probe into the psychological strains of their dual identities could provide a more intricate understanding of their characters.

Glover and co-creator Sloane have emphasized their intention to diverge from the conventional narrative of the 2005 film. Their mission was to rejuvenate the spy genre for a contemporary audience, a challenge they tackled head-on. Sloane's directorial insights highlight their dedication to subverting typical spy and action motifs, focusing on the everyday struggles and emotional entanglements within the Smiths' marriage. Don’t get me wrong, though; the series is still very much a spy thriller!

The series uniquely parallels the extraordinary aspects of a spy's life with the ordinary, bringing a sense of relatability and authenticity to the show. MR. & MRS. SMITH stands out by showcasing the adrenaline-pumping elements of espionage, delving into the aftermath of missions, and the evolving relationship dynamics built on a foundation of lies.

MR. & MRS. SMITH is an impressive reimagining of a well-known narrative. Glover and Erskine, supported by a strong ensemble, strike a delicate balance between edge-of-your-seat action and the nuanced intricacies of emotional bonds. The series shines with its originality, humor, and portrayal of spies as complex, relatable characters. MR. & MRS. SMITH offers a novel take on spy life, intertwining covert operations, risks, and the quest for genuine emotional connections in a labyrinth of deception. It's a series that introduces something novel to the spy genre, making it an engaging watch for both fans of espionage and viewers seeking a tale that resonates on a human level.
