RAVING REVIEW: In his latest film, THE SALES GIRL, Janchivdorj Sengedorj steps in a bold new direction away from his previous stories. He introduces a tale sprinkled with humor as it delves into the intricate back-and-forth between societal norms and individual identity—all set against the backdrop of a Mongolian sex shop. This film is not just entertaining; it's an innovative, profound probe into our roles and the selves we discover.

Mongolia’s bustling streets set the stage for THE SALES GIRL, where Saruul (Bayarjargal Bayartsetseg,) a nuclear engineering student, finds her life hilariously derailed by a banana peel. This slip doesn't just lead to a broken leg but catapults her into the peculiar world of a sex shop, filling in for a classmate. Portrayed with genuine warmth and complexity by newcomer Bayartsetseg, Saruul's unexpected calling detours her life. It becomes a gateway to a more extensive exploration of her identity and the societal boxes we often find ourselves in. Bayartsetseg offers one of the most striking and powerful yet subdued performances I remember seeing. It was an absolute joy, and I hope she decides to pursue more roles in the future.

On the other side of this story is Katya, portrayed by Enkhtuul Oidovjamts. She is a former dancer shrouded in mystery and always offers more questions than answers. Her initially rigid exterior gradually unveils a playful and nurturing spirit that guides Saruul through her unexpected journey. The chemistry between Saruul and Katya elevates the narrative, turning their interactions into the film’s emotional linchpin.

Under Janchivdorj’s nuanced direction, THE SALES GIRL tackles themes of sexuality and identity without ever descending into “crudeness.” The episodic approach carefully charts Saruul’s transformation and increased confidence in her journey. The screenplay is peppered with philosophical insights and historical reflections, adding a literary texture to the unfolding story.

The cinematography in THE SALES GIRL is intimate and striking, capturing the vibrant essence of urban Mongolia and the subtle dynamics among its characters. The film's depth is further amplified by a poignant soundtrack from local indie sensation Magnolian, which bridges traditional Mongolian sounds with modern rhythms. I loved the randomness of some scenes uniquely involving the music.

The film's integration of humor with deeper thematic concerns is a strength. The comedy arises organically from the authentic and colorful portrayal of the sex shop, accentuating Saruul’s personal growth without undermining the gravity of her revelations.

As Saruul navigates through this evolution on screen, the film aligns her inner transformation with the city's gritty backdrop, making the urban setting a silent narrator of her story. THE SALES GIRL gracefully and respectfully confronts its potentially controversial setting, prioritizing character development and emotional depth over sensationalist tendencies. This thoughtful approach dismantles preconceived notions about sex shops, recasting them as stages for meaningful personal discovery and growth.

THE SALES GIRL surpasses expectations in every way, blending wit and heartfelt narrative to craft a story that resonates. Janchivdorj’s purposeful direction ensures that the film appeals to a broad audience, securing its place as a noteworthy addition to contemporary Mongolian cinema. It is a compelling testament to the cast and crew's ability to engage audiences with stories that are as culturally enriched as they are emotionally resonant.
