RAVING REVIEW: In the heart of fandom lies the pulse of altruism, captured in BEHIND THE BUCKET: A GARRISON STORY. This documentary spotlights the Midwest Garrison of the 501st Legion, a band of STAR WARS devotees whose passion for cosplay transcends mere hobby to become a force for the good of their communities. Dressed in the regalia of stormtroopers and other galactic personas, these fans elevate their love for the saga to perform heartfelt acts of charity, turning fantasy into a tool for real-world impact. I’ve been a diehard STAR WARS fan for as long as I can remember, so I just connected with this film!

The film reveals how the Midwest Garrison transforms iconic costumes into beacons of hope. As they navigate the corridors of children's hospitals and orchestrate charity events, their presence brings scenes from STAR WARS into stark relief against the struggles of real life, delivering joy and escapism to those facing brutal battles. The documentary illustrates these poignant interactions, capturing the transformative power of compassion cloaked in cosplay.

A fascinating side quest within the film is the patch trading among the Legion members. Each patch, a token of personal and collective milestones, brings a unique backstory of the group's journey and achievements. This tradition enriches the narrative by giving viewers an insider's look at the culture and personal bonds that fortify the Garrison's mission.

The documentary doesn’t shy away from exploring the emotional heft accompanying their charitable missions. Interviews with families who have felt the Legion's impact provide a sobering view of what these gestures of kindness mean to those on the receiving end. These heartfelt testimonies underscore their work's significant, often life-changing, effects, offering a candid look at the emotional stakes involved. The incorporation of the Make-A-Wish America foundation and Angela’s story, becoming an official “friend of the 501st,” was a moment that hit me like no other! Moments like that are indeed what makes a film!

As a personal aside, although this moment wasn’t part of the film since it wasn’t the Midwest Garrison, there was a real-life moment that I followed. A Star Wars superfan, Daniel Fleetwood, was able to screen THE FORCE AWAKENS before he passed away, and I remember the 501st members who were in attendance adding such an added level of joy to the otherwise somber moment.

The film also applauds the Legion's inclusivity, showcasing a diverse cast of characters from the Star Wars universe. This diversity is in costume and spirit, challenging the stereotypes often associated with fandom. It portrays the Legion members not just as fans but as real-life heroes committed to their philanthropic mission, reinforcing the narrative that heroism isn't confined to the cinematic world.

Discussion of the logistics involved in maintaining such an elaborate hobby—from costume creation to financial contributions—highlights the dedication required to be part of the 501st Legion. Viewers are left with a profound admiration for the Midwest Garrison's endeavors. This film inspires, showcasing how fandom can be a powerful catalyst for kindness and community support. The film stands as a beacon of how shared passions can unite individuals in acts of widespread benevolence, turning fan culture into a vehicle for societal contribution.

Essential viewing for anyone curious about the impact of fandom on real-life issues, this documentary will resonate not only with STAR WARS enthusiasts but with anyone who values the power of community and the human capacity for kindness. It's a poignant reminder that sometimes, the most heroic acts arise not on the silver screen but through the simple act of donning a costume and reaching out a hand.
