RAVING REVIEW: Paramount+ has unleashed a thrilling new addition to the Sonic franchise with KNUCKLES, bringing Idris Elba back as the voice of the charismatic red echidna. Set in between Sonic 2 and 3 in the timeline, this series plunges viewers into an exhilarating journey as Knuckles (Idris Elba) learns what it takes to help Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) face his challenges in life and as a “true warrior,” in the ancient arts of Echidna combat. This fresh spin on the series is loaded with action-packed sequences and the same well-rounded humor we’ve expected from the movies. I am thrilled with their direction here; this could have been one of those knock-off CGI-animated spin-offs that used to be so popular. Instead, the same level of detail and artistry was given to a story that genuinely feels like it's in the same universe.
KNUCKLES stands out for expanding the Sonic universe and injecting a fresh, character-driven approach into the series while sharing a few moments that connect to the films with plenty of easter eggs for those looking. Transitioning from the big screen to an episodic series format has allowed for more intricate character arcs, particularly highlighting the evolving relationship between Knuckles and his “apprentice,” Wade. Their interaction is filled with humor and mutual growth, making it the series' heart. Plenty of solid one-liners will keep you entertained during the bingeable six-episode event.
Elba continues to impress as Knuckles, bringing a rich depth, [perfect voice casting, and continuity that will delight fans. Pally’s portrayal of Wade adds a relatable touch, blending well-placed humor with a dash of awkwardness that brightens the series’ more serious moments. This dynamic duo drives the story forward, making each episode a must-watch.
Under Jeff Fowler's direction, KNUCKLES retains a strong visual connection to the Sonic films yet confidently strides into new territories. John Whittington and Toby Ascher's creative influence ensures that the series stays true to the spirit of the original material while exploring new adventures and challenges.
The series is bolstered by a stellar supporting cast that includes Edi Patterson, Julian Barratt, and Ellie Taylor, alongside well-received cameos from Sonic stalwarts Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz. Their performances add vibrancy to the world of KNUCKLES, creating a fun journey filled with interactions that enhance the storytelling.
As the series breaks through walls (a lot of them) while creating a path for future explorations within the Sonic universe, it hints at a vast array of stories waiting to be told. The show showcases international talent and benefits from the diverse and scenic locations, adding a layer of visual spectacle to the high-octane action.
KNUCKLES promises to be a crowd-pleaser on Paramount+, appealing to longtime fans and attracting new fans to the franchise. The series combines action, comedy, and profound moments in a narrative that looks toward mentorship, growth, and adventure themes. This addition to the Sonic universe offers a refreshing and entertaining experience, promising to engage a broad audience with its imaginative storyline and dynamic character play—the perfect family-friendly journey into a new corner of this world.
