RAVING REVIEW: Panama's filmmaking scene offers a visually fascinating tale that delves deeply into its vibrant culture, even though it occasionally stumbles with handling some of the film's themes. This movie's true strength lies in its reliance on compelling visual storytelling that outshines its sparse, sometimes lacking dialogue. The film's visuals are one of its most vital points, giving a genuine feeling of dread and horror undertones.

We're introduced to Sofia (Ana Grethel Solis) and Carmen (Isabella Sierra,) sisters facing life's trials in an urban landscape. Sofia, embodying a dark, gothic vibe combined with street smarts, is fiercely protective of Carmen, whose world centers around her interest in anatomy. Their life is disrupted by an unexpected invitation to their grandparents' farm, setting the stage for the film's central mystery. This seemingly peaceful rural retreat quickly turns into a chilling setting for sinister revelations as the sisters begin to uncover hidden motives.

While the film doesn't venture into groundbreaking plot territory, it keeps viewers engaged by portraying ordinary settings shadowed by suspense and horror elements. The stark contrast between Carmen’s innocent enjoyment of the farm and Sofia’s escalating fear enriches the narrative, driving the plot with increasing tension.

The plot thickens dramatically as the sisters discover a dark family legacy involving the resurrection of an ancient, evil deity. This discovery propels the narrative from a simmering tale into a full-blown confrontation, with Sofia gearing up to face otherworldly threats. Despite a promising setup, the climax, brimming with action and mythological lore, doesn't quite hit the mark in intensity.

The film's evocative score and robust performances, especially by Grethel Solis, significantly boost the film’s impact. Its more ominous sequences are beautifully captured through meticulous cinematography, which amplifies the unsettling rural ambiance.

This piece from Panama breaks away from traditional film narratives by adopting a horror genre deeply intertwined with cultural folklore. This daring approach by filmmakers from a region often overlooked in mainstream cinema invigorates and highlights the potential for compelling storytelling that combines cultural myths with supernatural elements. I appreciated how the film focuses on its roots while enjoying the culture it comes from.

Although this film won't revolutionize the global cinematic landscape, it signifies an important milestone for Panamanian cinema in terms of thematic boldness and visual storytelling prowess. I’m curious to see what comes next from many of the cast and crew involved in the production. Its ability to engage and occasionally unnerve makes it a fascinating piece for viewers drawn to the interplay between traditional folklore and contemporary cinematic techniques.
