RAVING REVIEW: Take a ride in a flying modded 1948 Ford De Luxe convertible (if you know, you know) in this prequel series to the 1978 classic GREASE. In the new series GREASE: RISE OF THE PINK LADIES, the topics and themes resonate more profoundly with contemporary sensibilities than anything we saw in GREASE or its sequel. Paramount+ blends the enchantment of the original film with a refreshing, modern touch, creating an enthralling high school musical that speaks to both the past and the present. It strikes a harmonious balance between honoring its roots and embracing a more inclusive, diverse narrative. The nostalgia for this series was turned up to eleven!
In GREASE: RISE OF THE PINK LADIES, the iconic Pink Ladies are reenvisioned through the compelling performances of Marisa Davila, Tricia Fukuhara, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, and Ari Notartomaso. They bring a new depth and relatability to the screen, creating a cast of captivating and dynamic characters. Centered around Jane, played by Davila, the series looks into the complexities of balancing 1950s conservatism with modern-day progressive attitudes, weaving together themes of gender politics and teenage turmoil.
This series nods respectfully to its predecessor, Grease, with clever references and acknowledgments of the performances by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John and even a subtle homage to GREASE 2. GREASE: RISE OF THE PINK LADIES forges its unique path, blending the whimsical charm of the original with themes more reflective of today's diverse world, including explorations of interracial and LGBTQ+ relationships. Ultimately, I don’t think the series should have been canceled; I even signed a petition to bring the show back. This is undoubtedly one of the best new series that reinvigorated and continued as a classic for a new generation!
A standout feature of GREASE: RISE OF THE PINK LADIES is its unapologetic portrayal of the 1950s social and political landscape, going beyond period costumes to immerse both characters and viewers in the realities of racism and sexism of the era. The series shines in its casting, with each actor delivering performances that elevate the show. Davila, in her portrayal of Jane Facciano, is especially commendable. She navigates the turbulent waters of high school life with authenticity and grace, bringing a tangible depth to her character.
GREASE: RISE OF THE PINK LADIES is a fantastic addition to the television landscape, melding the sweetness of yesteryear with contemporary societal themes. While it may not fully recapture the original's magic, it stands confidently on its merits. The series, with its strong performances, relevant themes, and updated take on the beloved Rydell High story, makes for an engaging viewing experience. It invites the audience into a world where music and dance intertwine with the universal challenges of adolescence, offering a delightful escapade that connects different generations.
