Art has always been a passion and a make-or-break field to enter. This is why I love documentaries; endless stories are begging to be told that you would never know about otherwise. This film follows a group of artists who represent the modern challenges of what it means to work in the creative field today.
When thinking about being an artist, the ideals that one has been constantly put into question. Nevermore so than today, with the field evolving daily. From the pandemic to NFTs and everything in between, art has always been subjective, and it's at a breaking point today. Traditional art is a thing of that past, reserved for the elite. That’s a portion of what this generation is fighting for and, in doing so, creating their paths.
I was blown away learning about art galleries, I’ve always been intrigued by them from the outside, but the closest I’ve ever come to experiencing one was in my college art class, where we had a small gallery that students could use to display their work. In reality, they are another capitalist creation that isn’t regularly accessible for artists or those who just love art.
Even museums are brought into question in this film, my thoughts, and understanding of how a museum works were all wrong. Being private institutions without regular government funding, they are in danger of not being able to serve their purpose for the general public.
The pandemic also brought an entirely new challenge to the world of art. How do you connect with your audience when you can’t show your work in person. An overlooked skill of artists is their ability to rise to the occasion. They are figuring out alternatives to the problems they face and, in turn, hopefully bringing the medium they love back into their control.
A big thanks to Susan Norget Film Promotion for allowing me to screen this fantastic look into the current world of art.
