It is truly my honor to review some of the films from the 79th Venice International Film Festival. While I hope to attend the festival one day, this is the next best thing for now. I’ll cover a total of nine films entered into this year’s festival. This is the first of those nine; what a way to start!
Nominated for the Queer Lion trophy, this is in the category of the “Best Movie with LGBT Themes & Queer Culture,” and it truly packs a punch. The film is in great company with previous winners, including A SINGLE MAN, PHILOMENA, THE DANISH GIRL, and others.
While I wasn’t immediately familiar with any of the cast or the new feature-length director, I was quickly enamored with the passion of the story that unfolded in front of me. Ultimately this is an incredible story of life imitating art as director Florent Gouëlou initially wrote their first character of a drag queen before becoming one in real life.
This story could only be told through this lens; everything about the film fell into place because of the brilliant writing and directing. The cast embodied these characters and became the embodiment of what was being told on screen. Real drag queens were cast for these roles for ethical and artistic reasons. They could tell their stories within this larger landscape of the film. The director had forty artists from the French drag scene (drag queens, drag kings, and club kids) in the film.
This is probably one of the most inclusive films I’ve seen, yet it felt so natural. Never once did I feel like there was a lifestyle being forced on the viewer. Instead, this was a peak into this world through those who live it “three nights a week,” but they live it every day in reality.
