RAVING REVIEW: Jean-Claude Van Damme stars in the action thriller DARKNESS OF MAN, offering a performance that mixes nostalgia with a fresh perspective on his iconic roles. Although the film's pace may test the patience of some, the investment pays off with a second half filled with much-needed excitement. This film dives deeper into Van Damme’s ability to engage with more complex roles, showing off some acting chops he’s tuned over the years. However, it occasionally suffers from a script that can’t keep up with the ensemble’s enthusiasm.

DARKNESS OF MAN represents a significant shift from Van Damme's typical whirlwind of stunts to a performance that adds some actual depth to his rugged persona. This release demonstrates that Van Damme still possesses the fortitude for the fight, just putting a little more weight into the battle dialogue instead of the fists and kicks he so often used in the past.

The plot centers on Russell Hatch, a former Interpol agent haunted by a botched operation that resulted in the death of Esther (Chika Kanamoto,) his cherished informant. Van Damme portrays Hatch with real-life grit, digging his way into Miami's criminal depths, where he promises to shield Esther’s son Jayden (Emerson Min)  from the sinister forces that led to her death. The story is balanced with noir aesthetics, weaving a mystery and dark encounters that set the stage for intense confrontations.

Under the direction of James Cullen Bressack, DARKNESS OF MAN is steered with a decisive touch, creating a neo-noir atmosphere that complements its brooding storyline. The film benefits from solid performances by Shannen Doherty and Eric Roberts, who navigate the murky narrative with a mix of suspense and understated drama. Choreographed by Luke LaFontaine, the action sequences deliver an impact reminiscent of classic cinema yet fresh enough to fit in with today's action films.

As Hatch steps into the role of guardian for Jayden, his life becomes entangled in a complex web of gang conflicts and ethical quandaries. The film portrays these challenges against a backdrop of morally ambiguous characters, from a chaotic hotel manager to a hard-edged bartender, each contributing to the film's portrayal of a world where moral lines are blurred.

Despite its slow start, DARKNESS OF MAN picks up momentum, unfolding some well-crafted action scenes demonstrating Van Damme’s versatility in handling his role's physical and emotional demands.

While DARKNESS OF MAN may not reach the peak of Van Damme’s illustrious career, it is an okay addition to the action-drama genre. It merges suspense with moments of profound character study, offering Van Damme a platform to return to his action roots and delve into new, more textured, dramatic territories.

Ultimately, DARKNESS OF MAN will testify to Jean-Claude Van Damme’s lasting appeal as he still has a rabid fanbase that will seek out his films. Promising a satisfying experience for longtime followers and new viewers, the film combines traditional action elements with modern cinematic flair, proving that some action stars improve with age.
