This one was not for me; I wanted to get that out of the way because I know all too well that just because I didn’t enjoy something doesn’t mean others won’t. To me, cinema is entirely subjective, and you shouldn’t take someone’s word on if you’ll like a film or not. That’s one of the things that I try to get across in most of my reviews.
I appreciate the film’s synopsis; it was very well thought out and done with care. It simply reads, “A Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.” Too often, a synopsis will explore themes of the film that will give away more than they should.
I try my best to watch international films of all genres, so it shocked me that I didn’t recognize any of the main cast. Usually, there’s something that I’ll remember from a cast’s filmography. That possibly played into my appreciation for the acting in the film. Sometimes I think an “unknown” cast can play everyday people far better than a face I’m familiar with.
By every definition, this is a slow-burn film, and the payoff, in the end, is meant to shock and surprise. That’s where it probably missed me the most; I don’t mind being in something for the long run, THE BEST OF YOUTH is one of my favorite film experiences, and it was nearly seven hours long. My problem, though, is if a film is going to run that long, it has to have a lot of “meat on the bones,” and there has to be a purpose and reasoning.

Im here from tiktok. What can I say about this movie. I have not been so mad, angry and depressed from an ending of a movie since “Eden Lake” This is a slow burn about a family that wants to reconnect their flame in their relationship and have a little more adventure in their already bland day to day life. Just be careful who you meet and befriend. Is the slow burn worth the pay off I really dont know. All I know is when the ending started to unfold I was yelling at the screen. How could the parents be so stupid!? How could they not see the signs?! Why the hell didnt you leave!? Why the hell did you go back!? And why the hell arent you fighting and clawing doing anything to try and stop the end from coming
It’s crazy to me that a film can invoke so many emotions! In the end, I love that they can be that powerful!
This sounds very exciting I love the picture you painted for what I have to look forward to
