RAVING REVIEW: As the opening scenes of SCREWDRIVER unfold, I’m swept into a seemingly tranquil existence, which soon reveals an unnerving subtext. Here, the narrative probes the human psyche, compelling without reliance on high-octane action. AnnaClare Hicks embodies Emily with such raw authenticity that you feel tethered to her spiraling sense of reality. The onset of her ordeal at the hands of what should be a sanctuary of old friendship plays out with the finesse of a seasoned storyteller at the helm.

I saw something in this; having witnessed a friend go through something similar, where their savior became something else entirely, I felt the heartbeat of this film. A complexity that I have a hard time putting into words is present in this film, from the intentional dialogue to the chaoticly stern acting; these were decisions and not hindrances. You may have difficulty grasping the moment's reality if you have yet to witness similar situations.

In SCREWDRIVER, director Cairo Smith tackles a tale that intricately stitches the fabric of a psychological thriller with the real-world horrors of emotional entrapment. We witness Emily’s world breaking, not with the shock of a sledgehammer but with the precision of a scalpel, subtly dissecting her sanity as she navigates the increasingly claustrophobic corridors of her friends' home. The sterile environment, which Smith shapes into an entity in its own right, mirrors Emily's escalating isolation, making for a compelling narrative set piece.

The chemistry—or perhaps more aptly, the alchemical reaction—between the central characters propels SCREWDRIVER forward. Charlie Farrell's chameleon-like role as Robert is unnerving; his ability to shift from friend to fiend is as mesmerizing as it is disturbing. With her portrayal of Melissa, Milly Sanders is the perfect storm of cold hostility and manufactured warmth, keeping the audience guessing her true nature. Their performances weave palatable tension that binds you to the unfolding drama. The silence is as loaded as the dialogue, with each creak and whisper further tightening the narrative noose.

While this is an independent film, it doesn’t let onto that fact with a beautifully shot and produced film and a fantastic case. The film's ambiguity magnifies its eerie allure, and the intentional pull just when you think you know where things are going, it’s done so well that it’s maddening but brilliant at the same time.

SCREWDRIVER is a gripping portrayal of psychological warfare—a battle for self within the confines of an ordinary yet uncanny. It's a thought-provoking piece that encourages a deeper reflection on the unseen chains of control and autonomy. The movie leaves us pondering the complexities of influence and the intricacies of freedom. While the finale doesn’t wrap things up, the pieces we’re provided are as compelling as they are cryptic.
