RAVING REVIEW: It’s always a good sign when the first act of a film gets you in the feels! With DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH, I was immediately struck by the power of the film, the intensity, and the layer of discomfort in the world created within the film. The crumbling plantation house setting speaks louder than words, echoing the remnants of a fraught history. Under Tom Schulman's direction, Lili Simmons, Kim Coates, and Igby Rigney deliver compelling performances, breathing life into a story that redefines some traditional dramatic Western tropes. Despite some narrative missteps, the film impressively juggles suspense, drama, and an overall sense of dread.

Diana, portrayed by Lili Simmons, is the heartbeat of DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH. She's a wandering soul whose entry into a shadowy pool hall ignites the story and unknowingly changes multiple people’s lives. She instantly captures the attention of Nick, the establishment's owner, a role Kim Coates fills with a sinister charm. Coates' performance, a blend of menace, adds a rich layer to the film's emotional landscape.

Schulman's directorial vision breathes new life into this “down south” genre, placing a strong but realistic female protagonist at the forefront of a traditionally male-dominated setting. The script, also penned by Schulman, weaves a narrative rich in sharp dialogue and complex character development, although it occasionally had a few pacing issues due to prolonged conversations. The film ran slightly over two hours but went by quickly.

Regarding visual storytelling, DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH chooses a more classical path. The film offered a somewhat claustrophobic feel throughout, which helped to capture the intensity of some of the pool matches. I would have preferred a little more world-building from a visual standpoint. The building itself was well documented, but we get a one-dimensional ambiance without an idea of the lives of the people who occupied the screen.

Tackling themes of racism and sexism head-on, the film explores these pertinent issues in its narrative. Schulman's treatment of these themes is commendable for its directness, yet they sometimes seem to skirt the edges rather than being fully integrated into the storyline. I was waiting for the “big” moment, which never happened.

Performance-wise, DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH shines. Simmons, like Diana, portrays a character of strength and subtlety, making for a memorable and relatable protagonist. Conversely, Coates delivers a nuanced performance as Nick, balancing his character's darker traits with an intriguing mystique. Their on-screen chemistry drives the film, keeping the audience hooked on every scene.

DOUBLE DOWN SOUTH stands out with its unique focus on the enigmatic world of the keno pool. The film's strength lies in its character-driven plot and thematic depth. Although it faces challenges in pacing and visual dimension, it offers an engaging and thought-provoking viewing experience anchored by solid performances and a readiness to delve into complex societal issues. Despite some flaws, the film's exploration of personal ambition, societal expectations, and the journey toward redemption makes it a resonant and timely piece, leaving a lasting impact on its audience.
