RAVING REVIEW: DARIO ARGENTO PANICO is everything you could want from a  documentary and more. It’s an enthralling exploration into the life of Dario Argento, a name that echoes through the halls of horror cinema. Directed by Simone Scafidi, this film peels back the curtain on the man who created numerous genre-defying and defining titles, revealing the intricate mind of a man who's become an emblem of spine-chilling narratives. It’s a captivating ride, inviting viewers into Argento’s world. So, to be fair, I’ve been a big fan of every film I’ve seen of Argento, other than Suspiria (after watching this, it’s clear I need to give it another shot!)

DARIO ARGENTO PANICO begins with a playful, mockumentary-like tone, showcasing Argento in a hotel room, a setting that’s been a cradle for his creativity. However, this light-heartedness is a prelude to a deeper, more intense exploration of who he is and his creations. The documentary seamlessly transitions into a traditional style, engaging us with interviews that strip away layers, revealing Argento's multifaceted persona and a significant imprint on horror the horror genre.

What distinguishes DARIO ARGENTO PANICO is its profound humanization of Argento. The film presents him not just as the architect of nightmares but as a person grappling with his fears and internal demons. This aspect offers viewers a rare glimpse into the vulnerabilities of a man often seen only as a horror maestro. The documentary delves into the quintessence of the horror genre, illustrating how Argento’s work conjures a spectrum of emotions, from subtle unease to intense dread. While it highlights his renowned projects, the film illuminates his lesser-known ventures and even some less-than-stellar releases, painting a comprehensive picture of his artistic journey.

Scafidi's narrative traces Argento's path from his early exposure to his mother's photography work, through his tenure as a film critic, to his celebrated directorial pursuits. This trajectory showcases his evolution from a film enthusiast to a figure whose influence has permeated the horror genre. A notable strength of the documentary is its focus on Argento's prowess in creating complex, compelling female characters. Women who have risen to iconic status under his direction are spotlighted, underscoring Argento's ability to craft deep, intriguing characters.

While DARIO ARGENTO PANICO pays homage to Argento's legacy, the film sometimes feels more like a celebration without criticizing his work. As a whole, I don’t have an issue with it, but I did want to mention it at least. He deserves the praise, but that’s the only aspect I felt the documentary was missing.

Scafidi’s documentary is a fitting tribute to Argento's stature in Italian and the worldwide horror community. It merges past and present, emphasizing his lasting impact on the genre and influence on contemporary filmmakers. It’s an exploration that goes beyond his achievements, delving into his life story in and out of the limelight.

DARIO ARGENTO PANICO is a compelling watch for longtime horror fans and new alike. It’s a deep dive into a man's life, a myth, and a legacy that has significantly impacted the film world. Scafidi has tackled a narrative that is as informative as it is engaging, making this documentary a pivotal piece in understanding Argento’s profound influence on the genre.
