Passion, heart, community, strength, feminism, and friendship all describe portions of what made this relatively short documentary so powerful. I was in awe from the first scene through the close of the credits. This story is about much more than just the art these women create. It’s about the women behind the art and what allowed them to get to this point in their lives—often fighting every inch of their journey to overcome constant obstacles.
Years ago, I watched a short documentary film that ended up winning an Oscar; it was called INOCENTE. I remember being enthralled with the film, the story, and her power to overcome; everything about it just was an incredible story. While this is a very different story, I was reminded of her passion for art while watching this.
Each woman spotlighted here overcame whatever they came up against to reach their goals. They knew their passion drove them, and nothing would get in their way of achieving their goal. From a male-dominated field, money, and legal issues, even those in power were taking steps to prevent them from expressing their art freely. It seems that the more things they overcame, their art became part of them.
I’ve always been amazed by graffiti artists, I’m a graphic designer, so I can create “art” on a computer, but I couldn’t draw to save my life. Yet these artists can take spray paint (a medium traditionally used to cover as much area as quickly as possible) and turn it into a fine-point brush. The designs, angles, and lines they can create show a mastery of the craft that I can’t wrap my head around.
I don’t know what the extended-release plans on the film are but if you end up with an opportunity to see it at any point, make sure to give it a chance. You’ll never look at graffiti the same way again. I already considered it art, but now I see how much deeper the meaning and the artists can be.
