RAVING REVIEW: In the new captivating Hulu series THE ARTFUL DODGER, viewers are whisked away to 1850s Port Victory, Australia, where Jack Dawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster,) formerly known as the infamous Artful Dodger of London's streets, embarks on an unexpected career as a surgeon. This shift from his past life injects an exciting twist into the series, making it more than just a historical drama—it's a story of transformation and redemption.

THE ARTFUL DODGER vividly portrays a man's journey from the murky depths of crime to the esteemed annals of medicine set against 1850s Australia. This series takes the essence of Charles Dickens's classic character and reshapes it into something entirely original and enthralling. Dawkins, once a renowned pickpocket, now finds himself navigating the complex world of surgery, demonstrating that change, though challenging, is indeed possible.

David Thewlis's portrayal of Fagin is a true treat, blending charm and a hint of darkness to create a layered and unpredictable character. As Lady Belle, Maia Mitchell provides a strong female lead, challenging the era's gender norms with her determination to carve a place for herself in the surgery world. This is the most potent trio I remember leading a series in years!

The series' approach to depicting medical procedures is a standout feature, blending historical accuracy with an unflinching look at the rudimentary practices of 19th-century medicine. Though perhaps not for the faint of heart, these scenes add raw realism that enriches the narrative. These scenes specifically aren’t for those who are squeamish; there’s blood, needles, organs, and more throughout.

Jack's internal struggle, torn between his past and his aspirations for a respectable future, is a poignant reflection of the human condition. His journey is a testament to the enduring battle between personal identity and expectations, making THE ARTFUL DODGER not just a period drama but a story with timeless relevance.

The female characters, notably Lady Belle and her sister Lady Fanny (Lucy-Rose Leonard,) add a rich layer to the storyline. Their contrasting personalities and choices offer a window into the diverse experiences and societal pressures faced by women in the 19th century.

THE ARTFUL DODGER balances its rich historical setting with a plot that resonates with contemporary audiences. The series is more than just a nod to Dickens; it's a reimagining that speaks to the universal themes of redemption, identity, and societal change. The show weaves intricate character development, societal critique, and meticulous historical detail, creating an engaging and thought-provoking narrative. From the first scene, this felt like a hybrid mix of PEAKY BLINDERS and the Robert Downey Jr.-led version of SHERLOCK HOLMES.

THE ARTFUL DODGER is a unique and powerful addition to historical dramas with just that right twist that makes it something more. It's a series that challenges viewers to journey back in time while contemplating the timeless struggles of identity and morality. With its compelling characters, historical additions, and deep thematic exploration, THE ARTFUL DODGER is a series that not only captivates but also leaves a lasting impression on its audience, showcasing the enduring power of storytelling and character development.
