Documentaries are, without a doubt, one of my favorite film genres. There's something about a story being told, the real-life moments, and the insights that push them beyond the importance of a standard movie. There aren’t many films that I watch and instantly know that they will be among the best of the best. Writer/Director Sara Dosa’s documentary about the lives and careers of volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft was one of those films.

This story is about two people and their passion for life, volcanos, and the legacy they leave behind. The film's synopsis reads, “Katia and Maurice Krafft loved two things — each other and volcanoes, " which is more than evident in this film. From the moment I turned this on, through the last synopsis cards during the credits, explaining what further happened after the film's story ended, I was captivated. Dosa captured these moments through archival footage and told a complete story as though she was shooting the footage to tell the story firsthand.

One of the most intriguing moments in the film is when we see what Katia and Maurice’s legacy was; their research and sacrifices ultimately saved countless lives. We could all be so lucky to leave a path even close to the incredible journey that they had left. Sometimes the pure drive and determination to accomplish something are what it takes to change the world. This film tells a story that combined two improbable subjects and created what I think will be one of the year's top documentaries. If this doesn’t take home an Academy Award, I will be genuinely shocked, I’ve been watching all of the Academy-nominated films for almost a decade, and this has everything and more to claim that prize!

Remember to follow your passion, blaze a new path ahead, and leave ashes in your trail. Never accept that something isn’t possible; become the reason others say they can.
