While this wasn’t a perfect film, I was impressed by how often I was pulled back into the fold. The film is based on the book AN APPRENTICESHIP OR THE BOOK OF DELIGHTS by Clarice Lispector. So much of the film is, at its core, a study of humans, their beings, and their fay to day life.

The film focuses on Lóri (Simone Spoladore) and Ulisses (Javier Drolas) and digs into the core of love and what it takes to get there. The battle and journey throughout the film is the most intriguing aspect. These characters become all-encompassing; you feel like you are part of their path through the experience to their destinations.

While I can confidently say that I haven’t read many erotic novels, I can see why this was adapted. Director Marcela Lordy noted, “The film is an emotional erotic novel from the point of view of a contemporary woman in search of real affective connections.” After reading their statement about the film, I greatly appreciate the story. It’s a story of redemption, not of a person but love after it was taken from someone.

While this is most definitely adult themed, I feel like everything of that nature was handled so that the visuals overtake the story at no point. This didn’t feel like a cheap excuse to show anything on the screen, but those moments were used to expand the story. In addition to storytelling through a visual narrative, it caught me off guard how little dialogue was used in the film. I felt it was done to show loneliness on screen without pointing it out. The feeling of loneliness is such a mental battle that it’s hard to visualize it. Sometimes the absence of something you’re accustomed to makes a more vital point than just coming out and saying something.
