I was impressed with the entirety of the film, and the best part is that the artsy aspects were done with purpose. They helped move along the story and helped the entire experience encapsulate you while watching. Such an unexpected treat; this film proves my point that I don’t have an issue with “artsy” horror films.

The film’s synopsis tells you nothing about the film itself, but I think that’s my favorite part. “Set at an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas, and gastrointestinal disorders.” You can take what you want from it without knowing what it is about. I recommend not watching the trailer or reading anything about the film if you’re interested in seeing it.

I haven’t seen any of the director Peter Strickland’s other films, but I’ve read that this is very much his type of film. There’s a unique style and flair to it all, something about the feeling his style gives you while watching the film. Gwendoline Christie plays such a decisive role in the movie; I was impressed by how she was commanding yet restrained. I have to admit I haven’t seen many of her roles (I know…)

If you’re looking for a unique experience for the spooky season, you should give this one a chance. While it may not be terrifying, there’s enough of a chill to the entire film that will satisfy most people’s morbid curiosity. There’s enough to see that the film holds its style alone.

The more I experience Shudder, the more I appreciate it. This isn’t a Shudder original, but it was still a fantastic addition!
