An Homage to the Breakfast Club That You Won’t Be Expecting

Never judge a film until you watch it; this is the perfect example of why. A movie with Anthony Michael Hall and Debbie Gibson (yes, that Debbie Gibson) is an “homage” to THE BREAKFAST CLUB. Needless to say, I was expecting something that was phoned in and a play-off of the teen drama genre. Now don’t get me wrong, there are moments that I questioned a bit, and a few dramatic monologues left a little to be desired, but as a whole, I was legitimately impressed.

Quite possibly, the biggest surprise to me was that Debbie Gibson is a surprisingly good actress (I wasn’t expecting that one!) While Anthony Michael Hall has had issues outside of acting, he consistently plays the same role, but I appreciate the full-circle comeback to the genre that helped define his career early on. I will say that I wasn’t expecting the level of drama that this film ended up having.

The younger cast, the “breakfast club,” was, for the most part, all standouts. They went for it without pulling any punches. I was shocked to see what the actual storyline of the film ended up being. I was expecting one thing and instead got something entirely different. While the film has comedic elements, it is very much a drama.

My only issue was how deep some of the stories went. I felt like there wasn’t one specific person that you were supposed to “feel” for because every time you’d start to buy into one of the particular characters, it would then be topped by another.

Overall I was impressed at the homage to the source material but with a more modern take/twist on it without losing heart. In the end, it may have been a little too predictable, but it still had a solid message.
