RAVING REVIEW: A portrait of one woman’s journey brought to life through personal home videos turned into a film.

This is very much a personal film; at its core, it’s the story of Golda Maria Tondovska and her life from 1910 to the present (at the time it was filmed.) The film's synopsis reads, “In 1994, Patrick Sodelman filmed his grandmother, Golda Maria Tondovska, giving us the testimony of a Jewish woman born in 1910 and her journey through the century and its horrors. In 2020, Patrick and his son, Hugo, made this personal account into a film.”

While the film's pacing was pretty slow, it was incredible to listen to. This woman has seen things that most can only imagine. She’s survived battles that most would never want to imagine and has come out on the other side with a story unlike any I’ve heard.

This isn’t going to be a film that everyone appreciates, but it has so much heart to it that you would be hard-pressed not to be drawn into the story. Who would have thought a home video could have so much raw power and emotion that it could carry an entire documentary? It makes you wonder how many other stories are in a drawer.

At times the film was hard to listen to, not because of audio issues but because of being placed into these stories and hearing the horrors Golda lived through. She lived during a period that will never be recreated (hopefully); the battles that she saw and experienced firsthand are those that feel like the script of a movie.

Ultimately the most impressive part of the film is that she overcame all of these hurdles thrown in front of her and was able to give this incredible interview. She was able to tell us all about a story that no one else ever would be able to.
