RAVING REVIEW: WHAT WE DREAMED OF THEN is the kind of film that quietly sneaks up on you. It builds through small moments, quiet conversations, and the uncomfortable reality of a life slowly unraveling. Empathy, heartbreak, desperation, and longing drive Taylor Olson’s drama, which focuses on realities that rarely receive this level of attention, blending family dynamics with those of someone experiencing homelessness. Through a deeply personal narrative, the film explores how easily someone can fall through the cracks while still trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for the people they love.

At the center of the story is Gideon, played by Olson himself, a swim coach whose life begins to fracture when his family collapses around him. Financial pressure, emotional distance, and a cascade of personal setbacks gradually push him into a situation he never imagined. He has to live out of his van while attempting to maintain a connection with his daughter. The film never treats Gideon as a victim of a single event. Instead, it shows how a series of small collapses can slowly erode stability until the ground beneath someone disappears.

The concept of invisible homelessness becomes the backbone of the film. Gideon still goes to work. He still interacts with friends and colleagues. From the outside, nothing about him signals the reality of his situation. That tension creates an emotional pressure that runs through the entire film. Every interaction carries the weight of the secret he is trying to hide.

Olson’s performance is remarkably restrained. Gideon rarely breaks down into dramatic outbursts. Instead, he plays him with a constant sense of exhaustion and guarded vulnerability. The character is always calculating how to survive the next day without revealing the truth about his circumstances. That desperation becomes far more powerful than any melodramatic display of suffering.

The film’s nonlinear structure plays an important role in shaping the audience’s understanding of Gideon’s journey. Moments from the past weave together with the present, gradually revealing how his life reached this point. Scenes of family and ambitions contrast sharply with the harsh realities of his current situation. By moving between these timelines, the film emphasizes the fragile nature of stability. A life that once felt secure can unravel faster than anyone expects.

Christie Burke and Parveen Kaur provide strong support in roles that represent the people who make up Gideon’s world. Burke’s performance carries a mixture of empathy and frustration, reflecting how difficult it can be to support someone whose life is quietly falling apart. Kaur adds another layer that catches you off guard, offering moments that highlight how relationships shift when hardship enters the picture.

River Price-Maenpaa, playing Gideon’s daughter Faith, delivers one of the film’s most affecting performances. The dynamic between Gideon and Faith never leans into exaggerated sentimentality. Instead, the film presents their relationship through small gestures and fleeting interactions. A simple conversation or shared moment of play carries enormous emotional weight because the audience understands how fragile that connection has become.

One of the most impressive aspects of WHAT WE DREAMED OF THEN is how carefully it handles its subject matter. Stories about homelessness can easily fall into familiar traps, either turning characters into symbols of suffering or reducing their experiences to inspirational clichés. This film avoids both extremes. Gideon remains a complex human being with flaws, pride, and moments of uncertain judgment. His circumstances shape him, but they never define him.

The film also captures the strange paradox of living without a permanent home while still trying to maintain an ordinary life. Gideon continues to coach, interact with colleagues, and perform the responsibilities expected of him. Yet every day is shaped by the logistical challenges of survival. Where will he sleep tonight? Where does the next gallon of gas come from? How long can he maintain the illusion that everything is fine?

There are moments when the film’s nonlinear structure slightly blurs the timeline. A few transitions between past and present require viewers to piece together the chronology themselves. But that minor challenge also reinforces the fragmented nature of Gideon’s mental state. His memories and present circumstances begin to blend as he struggles to hold onto the identity he once had. The emotional weight of Gideon’s journey becomes undeniable as we progress through the story. It leaves viewers with a deeper understanding of how easily stability can disappear and how important human connection becomes when everything else falls away.

WHAT WE DREAMED OF THEN stands as a thoughtful and deeply human drama that shines a light on a reality many people overlook. Through its storytelling and performances, the film offers a compassionate portrait of resilience in the face of isolation.
