A film that screams homage to Wes Anderson in every way possible. From incredible set design, striking colors, and even some of Anderson’s traditional “players.” However, the film is very much it's own as well; it borrows lovingly from the whodunit film genre and is a love letter to the London theatre scene of the 1950s. If that sounds like a lot, that's because it is, but somehow, it manages to juggle everything like a person spinning plates on sticks.

This is my 281st film for the year, and I would argue that it had quite possibly one of the most poignant and timely quotes of any movie that I remember “Police aren’t armed in England. So how do they kill the bad guys? They don’t.”

I’m a little sad that Saoirse seemed to be underused in the film, not so much that she didn’t get to shine, but the cast ended up being pretty significant, preventing a lot of focus on any specific character. I have a soft spot for Ronan, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the cast wasn’t brilliant, either. I was impressed at how well the film progressed without dragging throughout. Often, a movie with a large cast and a complex story tends to get bogged down in its own way. Thankfully the writing here kept it straightforward and still fun as well.

It’s funny because every good whodunit has some twists but this one, while I felt was predictable, somehow was anything but predictable at the same time. It made for a simple yet brilliant ending that I enjoyed and kept a smile on my face long after the credits rolled. While it fell a little short of ultimately being clever, I loved the film. The entire idea of how the characters interact has an almost magical quality. I’m excited to see what else director Tom George brings to the table in the future!
