RAVING REVIEW: Some movies embrace their budgetary constraints and transform them into assets, delivering a creative, rough-around-the-edges experience that still packs a punch. TRANCERS is one of those films. With a blend of sci-fi, noir, and time travel, it taps into the best elements of genre filmmaking without competing with the era's big-budget productions. Instead, it thrives on its premise, performances, and a pulpy sense of adventure that keeps things fun despite its flaws.

The story starts in a bleak, dystopian future where the ocean has swallowed Los Angeles, and a man hardened by time, Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson), is on a mission to eliminate the sinister Whistler (Michael Stefani.) Whistler’s power isn’t brute strength or high-tech weaponry—his ability to manipulate weak-minded individuals into becoming zombie-like followers makes him a formidable threat (hmmm, this sounds like the current MAGA movement in the US.) These “trancers” look and act normal until triggered, making them unpredictable and dangerous. The solution? Jack must travel back to stop Whistler before his rise to power. But this isn’t the kind of time travel you’d expect. Instead of a futuristic machine or wormhole, TRANCERS takes a unique approach: consciousness transfer. Jack’s mind is sent back through his ancestral bloodline, meaning he wakes up in the body of his 1985 counterpart, Phil Dethton. It’s a simple yet creative twist that adds an extra challenge—Jack isn’t just a man out of time; he’s trapped in another person’s life, trying to save the future with limited resources.

This fish-out-of-water setup leads to the film’s most entertaining moments, particularly when Jack meets Leena (Helen Hunt,) a free-spirited woman who unwittingly becomes his partner in crime. Hunt brings an unmistakable energy to the film in one of her early roles, playing off Thomerson’s gruff performance as Jack. Their dynamic is a mix of charm, wit, and the kind of reluctant teamwork that gives the story an extra spark.

TRANCERS punches above its weight class. The neon-soaked streets, moody cinematography, and cyberpunk-influenced aesthetics create a much grander atmosphere than the film’s budget should allow. The future sequences, though brief, do an admirable job of setting the stage, using practical effects, miniatures, and creative lighting to build a world that feels both grim and intriguing. But it’s the 1985 setting that truly gives the film its identity, playing up the contrast between Jack’s hardened future-warrior persona and the grittier, more grounded cityscape of the past.

The film’s action is simple but effective. Shootouts, chase scenes, and close-quarters fights are executed with a scrappy, low-budget intensity that works within the film’s limitations. There’s a resourcefulness to how the action is staged—no overblown spectacle, just tight, effective sequences that keep the tension alive. And then there’s Jack’s secret weapon: the “long-second” wristwatch. This handy gadget allows him to slow down time for a few moments, giving him a crucial edge in combat. It’s a fun addition that injects a bit of sci-fi flair into the fights without relying on expensive effects.

What makes TRANCERS stand out isn’t just its story or style—it’s how confidently it embraces its identity as a B-movie. The film never overreaches. Instead, it leans into what it does best: a fast-paced ride with an intriguing lead, a unique twist, and a setting that feels strange enough to be captivating. Thomerson’s performance is a major highlight, balancing the grizzled detective archetype with dry humor and the reluctant heroism that makes Jack Deth a memorable character.

It’s no surprise that the film went on to spawn sequels, expanding on its time-traveling, trance-hunting premise. While the follow-ups varied in quality, the fact that this small-scale sci-fi noir managed to launch a franchise speaks to its lasting appeal. It’s the kind of film that thrives on cult status—maybe not polished enough for mainstream blockbuster success, but packed with enough charm and originality to leave an impression.

For fans of genre-bending sci-fi, TRANCERS is a film worth experiencing. It’s got action, humor, and a clever take on time travel that makes it stand out from its contemporaries. While its budgetary constraints are evident, its commitment to storytelling and character makes it more than another forgotten 80s sci-fi flick. It’s a film that proves creativity and ambition can outshine big-budget spectacle any day.
