RAVING REVIEW: Taking its queues from gothic horror, Jaco Minnaar's directorial debut, PEACOCK, offers a potent blend of the unsettling mixed with the beautiful. Set against the South African countryside backdrop, the film centers around the character of Anna Pohl, portrayed by Tarryn Wyngaard. Her journey, marked by defiance against a conservative upbringing and her role as a caregiver, lends the film an air of profound, introspective mystery. PEACOCK emerges as a riveting exploration of the horror genre, inviting viewers into a world where fear intertwines with beauty. From the first frame, you’ll notice something different about this experience. I don’t think I could figure out what it was, but there’s just something unique about it.

The film's setting – a remote farmhouse – becomes vital to the film's story, providing the perfect backdrop for a narrative steeped in suspense and enigma. Jonathan Kovel's cinematography captures the essence of this eerie environment, while Clancy Paris' haunting score weaves a thread of chilling atmosphere throughout the tale. The randomness adds a layer of intrigue to the experience; the unknown intentionally leaves the viewer questioning things at every turn.

In her portrayal of Anna, Wyngaard shines, navigating the complex waters of societal expectations and personal identity with finesse and depth. Johan Botha's depiction of Sarel Cilliers, a man haunted by his history, adds complexity to the story, making his performance a standout. The tension on screen is palpable; it feels like it's oozing out of almost every scene in this slow-burn journey.

PEACOCK feels grounded in some aspects while soaring to the highest peaks in others. Though present, the horror elements lack the punch they could have; I wanted a darker take on the subject, and some of these moments felt more like a thriller than horror. I would have also looked at a more detailed look into the past. These characters have rich and emotional on-screen portrayals, but we don’t always know why.

The ensemble cast, including Ruan Wessels in a vital supporting role, delivers performances that resonate with authenticity, contributing significantly to the film's immersive narrative. A special mention must go to the visual effects and cinematography, which underscore the talents within the South African film industry.

PEACOCK tackles a spectrum of themes, from the intricacies of personal identity to the haunting legacy of cultural and religious beliefs. The film creates a visually arresting and intellectually stimulating experience by channeling these themes through the characters portrayed. Yet, it needs to fully leverage the horror genre's potential, which would have heightened the film's eerie charm.

PEACOCK marks a bold and innovative addition to the South African cinematic landscape. It offers an original interpretation of gothic horror, intertwining regional cultural stories with universally resonant themes. Despite a few stumbles, the film shows a vital commitment from its cast and crew's creative passion and commitment, heralding a promising future for Minnaar in filmmaking. This film is recommended for those seeking a horror story exploring psychology and culture with a visually thrilling narrative.
