RAVING REVIEW: When you think of SCOTT PILGRIM, you set yourself with expectations that come with anything tied to the property, and SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF knows that going in. It doesn’t ignore those expectations; it actively messes with them, setting up something familiar before pulling the rug out from under it in a way that’s either going to completely win you over or leave you trying to recalibrate what you thought you knew and thought you were getting.
On the surface, it looks like a straightforward animated version of the story people already know. Scott meets Ramona, the seven evil exes stand in the way, and everything seems to be lining up for a retelling with a new visual style. That doesn’t last long. What follows instead is a reworking that shifts focus, restructures the narrative, and turns what could have been a play-by-play adaptation into something far more unpredictable.
That decision is the defining element of the series. Rather than repeating the same story from the graphic novels or the live-action film, the show expands outward, giving supporting characters more space and reframing the story from angles never explored before. It’s a risk, especially for a property with such a dedicated fan base, but it’s also what keeps the series from feeling redundant.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Ramona Flowers benefits the most from that shift. She becomes more than just the catalyst for Scott’s journey, taking on a more active role that gives her motivations and perspective far more importance. It adds depth to the story in a way that feels earned, even if it changes the dynamic people might be expecting.
Michael Cera’s return as Scott Pilgrim is still central to the series, but the way the character is used here might catch some viewers off guard. The show isn’t always focused on him as the title might suggest, and that imbalance is intentional. It opens the door for the rest of the cast to step forward, giving characters like Wallace, Kim, and even the exes more room to exist beyond their original functions.
That expanded focus works because of the voice cast. Bringing back the original film actors could have easily been a gimmick, but it turns out to be one of the show’s strongest qualities. There’s a familiarity in how these characters sound, and that continuity helps ground the more unconventional storytelling choices. You can feel that the cast understands these roles, even when the material takes them in new directions.
The series leans into an anime-inspired style that complements the tone without overwhelming it. The animation is expressive and energetic when needed, particularly during action sequences. At the same time, it knows when to pull back, allowing quieter character moments to hit without distraction.
The pacing is where things get a bit uneven. The first few episodes move with a clear sense of purpose, establishing the shift in direction and setting up the new structure. The middle stretch, however, can feel slightly scattered as it juggles multiple character arcs and ideas. It’s not that the material isn’t interesting; it’s that the focus occasionally drifts, making certain stretches feel less put together than others. By the time the final episodes get here, the series regains its footing. The story begins to converge, and the show commits to its direction with confidence.
One of the more interesting aspects of the series is how it engages with its own legacy. It doesn’t exist in isolation, and it doesn’t pretend to. There’s a clear awareness of the graphic novels and the film, and the show uses that history as a foundation rather than a blueprint. That approach gives it a sense of purpose beyond simply adapting existing material. That said, this isn’t the easiest entry point for newcomers. The series assumes a certain level of familiarity with the characters and their world. Without that context, some of the choices might feel confusing. This feels very much like a continuation rather than a starting point.
From a physical media perspective, this release is a great addition. The Blu-ray presentation delivers clean visuals and solid audio, and the inclusion of commentary from Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski adds meaningful insight into the creative process. For a series built on reinterpretation, that kind of behind-the-scenes perspective feels especially valuable.
SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF refuses to be predictable. It takes a concept that could have easily played it safe and instead chooses to challenge both the material and the audience. Not everything here lands, and there are moments where the structure feels stretched thin, but the ambition behind it carries the series through. It’s not trying to replace what came before. It’s trying to stand alongside it, offering a different perspective on a story that many people thought they already knew. For fans willing to go along with that shift, there’s a lot here to appreciate.
