RAVING REVIEW: In RELAX, I'M FROM THE FUTURE, Luke Higginson bravely defies the usual doomsday tales associated with time-travel stories. Instead, he opens a window to a brighter, more hopeful tomorrow, a perspective that hooks and holds.
It's not just another day when Casper, portrayed by Rhys Darby, lands in our present from an unknown future. Dressed in a rather unconventional manner, his every move is intentionally comedic (which wears a bit then, but that’s who Darby is, and he’s made the most of it!). He paints vivid images of a world yet to come, yet finding someone to buy into his tales is a different story? Just when things seem bleak, enter Holly; Gabrielle Graham captures her punk-rock spirit beautifully, adding zest to the unfolding chronicle. Through shared stories and connections, they embark on temporal adventures that are surprisingly thrilling.
The intrigue of this cinematic journey doesn't just lie in its comedic veins but in the silent, emotional threads that tie characters and viewers together in an oddly relatable story. It leans into the challenges and intricacies of contemporary life, tackling some, at times, heavy topics from an exterior. Initially guarded, Holly gradually softens as Casper’s eternal optimism radiates, trapping her in a better overall vibe—their dynamic strikes a chord with the audience, highlighting the themes of hope, dreams, and the human essence.
Just as you think you know where the story is going, enter Doris, played by Janine Theriault, who portrays a seasoned traveler in time whose goals starkly contrast with Casper's. This face-off lends an edge of suspense, adding depth to a one-dimensional story.
Higginson taps into comic book visuals, dishing out frame after frame that's narrative-driven and visually fun. However, every film has its glitches. There are moments when the story's rhythm could be more on pace with the rest of the film. Though humor remains the backbone, the comedic timing sometimes feels slightly off-beat. Yet, such moments are fleeting and get overshadowed by the excellent performance of the cast. Darby's performance as Casper is magnetic, effortlessly portraying a wise and whimsically lost man.
Towards the film's end, the narrative takes another intriguing turn as Julian Richings, as Percy, leaves an undeniable imprint, carving a niche into the movie's universe. While several story angles might feel stretched at times, they all converge, culminating in an emotionally rich ending.
Wrapping it up, RELAX, I'M FROM THE FUTURE is not your run-of-the-mill time-travel spectacle. It tackles emotions, relationships, and hope, all set against the backdrop of the timeless theme of time itself.
