First and foremost, as I’m located in America, I have to get a few things out of the water for my readers. First, the film isn’t rated, but I would put it as an R for the content. Not something for family viewing. Now that we’ve covered that, the other elephant in the room is that it’s primarily in French. I just like my readers to know what to expect; I don’t personally have issues with either.

So let’s talk about this cast!!! Virginie Efira (BENEDETTA,) Adèle Exarchopoulos (BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR,) Gaspard Ulliel (HANNIBAL RISING, and MOON KNIGHT,) Sandra Hüller (TONI ERDMANN,) and Laure Calamy (FULL TIME.) While some of those films may not mean much to many people, these are some of the most impressive performances I’ve seen in the last decade! When you’re able to get a cast like this together, that doesn’t always necessarily spell success, but in this case, it did and then some!

Films about writing/filmmaking have a place in my heart automatically. I love seeing these creative crafts given life on screen. The movie's synopsis on IMDb simply reads, “A jaded psychotherapist returns to her first passion of becoming a writer.” I think that’s an excellent synopsis; it doesn’t give away more than necessary while also drawing in someone who has no clue what the movie is about. It takes an actual level of skill to show emotion on screen and be able to direct and write it as well. An actor is only as good as the crew behind them and vice versa. That’s why performances like this impress me so much.

The film was great because it combined so many significant aspects. As mentioned earlier, the acting was stellar, but there was far more than that. The cinematography was gorgeous; the spoken dialogue kept you in nearly a trance the entire time anyone was speaking. I will say one scene stuck with me; I won’t ruin anything, but it takes place on a boat, and I can’t remember the last time I remember seeing such raw emotion on screen. It helps that the gorgeous background was stunning, making for a very appealing scene.

Thank you to Music Box Films for allowing me to review this fantastic film!
