A Unique Mix of a Comedic Thriller That Works to Perfection

I love a film that evolves into something more than what you see on the surface, and that’s precisely what we get here. We get a straightforward crime thriller who-dun-it that was truly interesting on its own, but the fun starts when things don’t go as planned. As the film progresses, we find out that the story is much deeper than just that. The genre label is a comedy/thriller, and while there are comedic elements, I wouldn’t say this is your traditional comedy by any stretch. This is a little bit of a dark comedy with lighter bits thrown in for balance.

I enjoyed the pacing of this film, and it seemed to be a perfect mix between dialogue-driven exposition and fun visual-driven scenes. The chemistry between Sandrine Kiberlain (Claire Mayer) and Vincent Lacoste (Martin Rémi) gave a fun-filled and intriguing onscreen experience, even when the story took darker turns. Kiberlain had such a unique charm, a performance that felt like more than the role, both fun and with a little twist of something.

Director Nicolas Pariser (LE GRAND JEU, ALICE AND THE MAYOR) offered up a film with intrigue and one that asks a lot of questions while simultaneously giving the audience everything they could want. It is a simple story of a man accused of a crime on a mission to prove that he didn’t do it. The real fun of the story takes a turn when we learn more about the actual killer and what they plan to do to keep the accused as the target.

This is bitter-sweet, as this is more than likely the last film that I’ll be screener from Cannes (at the same time they are.) This was such an absolute pleasure; I’ve never felt closer to the larger film community as a whole. While I screen a lot of films, I honestly never thought I’d have the honor of viewing those that are up for some of the most significant accolades in the industry. Hopefully, this won’t be my last time, and maybe someday, I’ll be writing these from a café in Cannes, France!
