RAVING REVIEW: In the film REFLECT, director Dana Kippel crafts an enthralling tale of inner discovery and mysticism set against the stunning backdrop of Sedona, Arizona. This film is a deep dive into the psychological and metaphysical, challenging our perceptions of reality. Kippel’s directorial debut is a bold step into a fusion of genres, creating a cinematic experience that’s as thought-provoking as visually stunning.
At the helm, Kippel navigates the waters of spiritual exploration with a clear warning of what going too far means. Her storytelling, infused with elements from Carl Jung’s profound insights and Maureen Murdock’s mythological exploration, makes for a narrative that resonates on multiple levels. The film's unique tone stems from this eclectic blend, providing a fresh perspective on familiar themes.
The story revolves around Summer, played by Kippel, who, along with her friends, embarks on what they expect to be a rejuvenating retreat. Instead, they find themselves in a surreal and intense 'Game of Life,' facing their internal demons and past traumas. The casting is spot-on, with Grace Patterson as Katie and Jadelyn Breier as Liz, among others, delivering powerful and deeply touching performances. Their portrayal of complex characters adds a rich layer of authenticity to the film.
A visual trip, REFLECT, makes excellent use of its limited budget. The cinematography captures Sedona’s natural splendor, particularly the enigmatic 'vortexes' of Cathedral Rock and The Birthing Cave. These locations are integral to the story's supernatural vibe, lending the film an air of otherworldly beauty. Don’t get me wrong, the film is an indie production, but you can tell it was done with passion, heart, and a creative vision.
The film tends to wander in its middle section, causing a slight dip in the narrative drive; while it recovers well, it loses a little of its focus. The dialogue, rich in substance, could have been more streamlined, creating a more impactful experience overall; the deep dive was exciting but could also serve to be slightly distracting at times.
In exploring spirituality and mental health, REFLECT approaches its subject matter with a sensitive and reflective lens. The incorporation of metaphysical elements invites the audience to question and reflect on the nature of their reality, adding a philosophical depth to the cinematic journey.
Ched Tolliver's score, accompanied by the music of Tina Guo, creates an auditory landscape that beautifully complements the film’s rich visual storytelling. This harmonious blend of sound and imagery immerses the audience in a uniquely atmospheric world, enhancing the overall sensory experience.
REFLECT is an innovative departure from traditional film genres. It offers an intriguing blend of self-discovery and unseen mystical forces. Kippel's debut is commendable, showcasing her ability to handle a visually and intellectually rich story. Despite some narrative hiccups, the film is a promising start to what could be a remarkable filmmaking journey for Kippel, highlighting her potential as a multifaceted storyteller in the world of cinema.
