RAVING REVIEW: MÉXICO BÁRBARO II carves a unique niche in the expansive horror genre, emerging as a noteworthy entry to anthology horror. This collection features eight short films by different directors; while I haven’t seen the first set of films, I was told I could watch these without missing anything. From supernatural chills to profound social commentary, each story is steeped in the rich history of Mexican folklore, offering a fresh perspective on familiar terror tropes.

In MÉXICO BÁRBARO II, the opening act, "Juan the Soldier," crafted by Abraham Sánchez, transports viewers to a desert landscape that sets the stage for a story of injustice and supernatural struggles. While not overloaded with special effects, this piece stands out with its powerful performances and visually arresting cinematography, laying a solid foundation for the anthology.

However, the journey through this chilling collection has its share of highs and lows. "Paidos Phobos" stumbles in moments, generating the expected suspense and gore, leading to a somewhat predictable outcome. In contrast, "Potzonalli" counters this by weaving dark humor with elements of cannibalism, delivering a gripping and intense narrative.

Exploring less conventional avenues, "Fireballs" dives into the depths of the adult film industry, mixing an experimental approach with a touch of humor. Its off-kilter ending highlights the anthology's willingness to push the boundaries of traditional horror.

Among the diverse stories, "Vitriol" distinguishes itself with its heavy, oppressive atmosphere and understated approach, creating a profoundly unsettling experience without relying on conventional horror devices.

The anthology spans a wide range of themes, from the childhood fears explored in "No Te Duermas" to the lighter, comedic elements in "It's About Time" and the darker, more complex narrative of drug addiction and S&M in "Exodontia." This diversity is one of MÉXICO BÁRBARO II's greatest strengths, catering to a broad spectrum of horror enthusiasts.

While specific segments like "Paidós Phobos" don't quite reach their full potential, others excel in their unique portrayal of themes. "Potzonalli" and "Bolas de Fuego" stand out with their inventive takes on family revenge and the adult entertainment industry. "Vitriol," in particular, impresses with its seamless mixing of social critique and horror elements.

The anthology culminates with Lex Ortega's "Exodoncia," a stark and intense exploration of drug addiction in Mexico. This piece's depth of atmosphere and coherent storytelling elevate it to the climax of the collection.

MÉXICO BÁRBARO II represents a powerful exploration of storytelling in the short form via various directors' voices.
