RAVING REVIEW: This unique indie drama, BLISS lets us step into a world where the resilience of the human spirit is tested against life's stark realities. Joe Maggio takes us from the energetic pulse of New York City in the 2001 prequel VIRGIL BLISS to the calming vastness of the Californian desert for its follow up. It's a feast for the eyes and a deep exploration of redemption and perseverance.

In BLISS, Maggio brings us a sequel that's more than just a continuation; it's an evolution in storytelling and character development. Set twenty years after the events of VIRGIL BLISS, the film reconnects us with Clint Jordan's portrayal of Virgil, now battling the demons of opioid addiction, and the fallout from his actions in the first film. His character's journey intersects with the Faryl Amadeus performance in the film that will leave your jaw on the ground!

This scenery change in the film isn't just a change in setting but a transformative shift in the film's visual narrative. Maggio's directorial approach has matured, evolving from a raw, unpolished street level style to a more sophisticated and layered storytelling technique. Each frame of BLISS tells a story, contributing to the film's overarching themes of love, resilience, and redemption.

Jordan's performance as Virgil is nothing short of mesmerizing. His evolution from the original film to BLISS showcases a journey from a raw, unrefined talent to a seasoned actor capable of delivering deeply emotional and complex performances. The on-screen chemistry between Jordan and Amadeus is a highlight, adding authenticity and depth to their shared scenes.

Amadeus, deserves all the credit in for her portrayal in the film. She infuses this journey with a unique essence, integrating herself into the narrative. Her versatility is a standout, contributing significantly to the film's emotional gravitas.

Maggio's approach to filmmaking prioritizes creative expression over commercial constraints, lending the film a genuine and passionate feel. While VIRGIL BLISS was a raw, shot on video guerilla style film, BLISS sees the evolution of technology and the maturity of those involved. At its core though, the film is still a sternly independent story.

The true strength of BLISS lies in its storytelling. The film delivers a compelling, character-driven narrative without relying on the extravagance of high-budget productions. The audience is drawn into Virgil's struggle and quest for redemption, making his journey relatable and captivating. While you can watch BLISS on its own, I think its worth it to check out the first film as well to get the full picture.

BLISS sets a high bar with the trilogy's finale on the horizon. The blend of various genres and the film's emotional depth have heightened anticipation for how Maggio will conclude this powerful narrative. I’m fully invested and can’t wait to see the next chapter (here’s to hoping we won’t have to wait another 20 years!)

BLISS is a sequel that transcends its predecessor. It builds upon the original narrative of VIRGIL BLISS with Jordan delivering a refined and emotionally resonant performance. The film's success in blending different genres and providing a story that resonates deeply with its audience solidifies its position as a standout in independent cinema. As we eagerly await the trilogy's final chapter, BLISS leaves us with a profound impression of a well-told story and a character journey that is heartfelt and relatable.
