RAVING REVIEW: RESTORE POINT set in Prague in the near future of 2041, our global village teeters on a precipice of social and economic disparity. Amid this unsettling reality, the movie unveils an audacious invention that overturns the rules of life and death, capable of breathing life back into victims of violent crimes. And who better to navigate this labyrinth of life, death, and resurrection than a gifted detective out to untangle a murder mystery?

A product of the Czech film scene, RESTORE POINT is a leap into scientific breakthroughs and societal upheavals. Although reminiscent of the cerebral depths explored in prominent science fiction, this one marches to the beat of its drum. Robert Hloz, the director behind RESTORE POINT, paints a compelling image of a world where the Grim Reaper is forced to clock out. Set against rising crime rates, his story hinges on cutting-edge cellular regeneration technology, giving the public universal access to resurrection services via the Restore Institute.

Our story follows a Detective, played earnestly by Andrea Mohylová, our guide through a society grappling with moral quandaries. Knee-deep in a case involving the “River of Life” group, whose stance against artificially extending life throws a wrench in the societal machine. The cinematic language used by Hloz and his co-scribes, Tomislav Cecka, and Zdenek Jecelin, sets the stage for a gritty view of future Europe. Their commitment to high-concept narrative and impressive visual composition signals Hloz’s readiness for grander cinematic exploits.

RESTORE POINT is open to exploring the implications of resurrection technology. Still, it comes with a crucial caveat – revival is only possible if a person’s consciousness is archived within 48 hours. This limitation injects relentless fear and paranoia into the mix, prodding individuals to back up their consciousness at every turn.

Although RESTORE POINT might seem to play it safe with its conventional narrative arc and the all-too-familiar figure of a troubled detective, the plot’s attention to detail and well-executed pacing create an engaging experience. But as the film walks us through the shadowy nooks and crannies of a city where resurrection is the norm, I found myself looking for the more profound implications of this digital immortality.

Despite some missed opportunities to probe deeper into existential territories, RESTORE POINT is still a triumph. Hloz’s vision of 2041 might be an homage to other more familiar works, but his striking use of architecture and production design enhances the narrative’s intricacy. The film’s integration of advanced technology offers a captivating glimpse of a future world teetering between progression and decay.

RESTORE POINT sets the stage for exploring the socio-political and environmental dynamics of a tumultuous future. However, it remains tethered to the core murder investigation, maintaining a consistent narrative pace. As a remarkable addition to the dystopian neo-noir genre, RESTORE POINT skilfully merges bustling cityscapes with towering skyscrapers to create a world where death itself is not a barrier. This Czech thriller delivers a winding narrative within a breathtakingly designed megacity, exploring the boundaries of life, death, and the technology that blurs the line between them.
