CHILDREN OF THE WICKER MAN HEADS TO BLU-RAY WITH A DEEPLY PERSONAL STORY BEHIND A FOLK HORROR CLASSIC
Severin Films is bringing something special to physical media collectors and fans of folk horror this summer with the worldwide Blu-ray premiere of CHILDREN OF THE WICKER MAN, arriving June 30.
This award-winning documentary takes a different approach to the legacy of THE WICKER MAN, shifting the focus away from the film itself and toward the complicated reality behind it. Directed by Dominic Hardy and Justin Hardy, the sons of original filmmaker Robin Hardy, the film explores not just the cultural impact of the 1973 classic, but the personal cost that came with creating it.
Rather than treating the film as untouchable, CHILDREN OF THE WICKER MAN digs into the human side of its history. Through archival materials, interviews, and a return to key locations, the documentary examines the chaos of the original production, Hardy’s struggles with the studio, and the ripple effects those experiences had on his family. It’s positioned as both a tribute and a reckoning, offering a perspective that hasn’t really been explored in depth before.
The release will also be accompanied by a substantial 232-page hardcover book, featuring previously unseen documents and photographs from Robin Hardy’s personal archive, along with original illustrations by Dominic Hardy. Fans will have the option to pick up the book on its own or as part of Severin’s Wicker Basket Bundle.
On the technical side, the Blu-ray includes a 96-minute feature presentation with English 5.1 audio and English SDH subtitles, along with a solid lineup of extras. These include an audio interview with the filmmakers, a Q&A session, a making-of featurette, and the film’s trailer.
Early reactions have already pointed to the film’s emotional weight, with praise highlighting its intimate look at obsession, loss, and the complicated legacy tied to one of horror’s most enduring titles.
For collectors, this release fits right in line with what Severin does best: preserving not just the films themselves, but the stories surrounding them. And in this case, that story might be just as compelling as the film that started it all.
